Re: pipe No.9

Thanks Sandahl Pipe, My thoughts on flaws right now is that since these pipes will never leave my house, unless their stuck in my mouth, then this is a great opportunity to practice polishing and finishing. Even if there are pits and what not, I can still practice and experiment. A sandblaster is wa...

pipe No.9

Hey Gang, Here is my latest, I welcome any feedback. I tried to apply some of the bowl-line advice from Jeremiah on the last pipe. This one is considerably thinner and lighter than my last few, so that feels like progress. I am happy with the shape and proportions, but I see my errors, too. I took a...

Usually, I like a blast with a contrast stain, but your solid black blast is delicious!
There's something about it, that seems almost gooey. So nice.

Re: Any pipemakers in Portland, OR, or the surrounding?

Brilliant to look for a local maker to visit. I had considered trying to visit makers on vacation or day job trips. But, never thought one might be close. That's just always how I've learned best. I need to SEE and TOUCH and be able to ask questions at the moment, not later when I can get to my com...

Re: Any pipemakers in Portland, OR, or the surrounding?

Ha! PDX is the airport code for the local runway, but most folks round here use it interchangeably with the city name. If I remember correctly, Dirty Annie's was a restaurant/gas station/den of iniquity just before heading over the mountains. I bought a hat.....

You should come lay hands on some tools in PDX, cause that's how we do.

Drove through Wyoming once or twice. My favorite mesh-back is from Dirty Annie's.
Know that place?

Any pipemakers in Portland, OR, or the surrounding?

Hey everyone, I'm wondering if any of you live in the Portland area, or know of any pipe makers in these parts. This forum is AMAZINGLY helpful, but sometimes it helps even more to talk to someone face to face, to lay hands on their tools and pipes. Just reaching out to see if some one else is close...

Re: Bent Billiard

I really like the shape. I think the stoutness of the shank and stem work because they are balanced out by long graceful curves, sturdy and elegant at the same time. Very nice!

Definitely smaller files. And let me suggest investing in good files for just about everything. There was a recent discussion on fast cutting files that was helpful. I need to post pics of my files soon. Yup, I read, googled, and bookmarked all over that thread.... just need to process, make some d...

Re: flake or spray shellac for amateur maker

Seems like I see lots of guys applying stain and shellac with pipecleaners. Just because they're disposable? Seems like a wide soft brush would be faster, allow for a lighter touch, and more even coverage.... Is it just an ass-pain to keep the brushes nice and clean? Or is it the well-loved 'just us...

Re: New Pipe Kits

In my eyes the bowl on your prince is just touch too big for the shank and stem.
I think the shape looks really good, well rounded, nice and even, very symmetrical, just a bit too big.

Cheers,
Jeremy.

Re: first post for critique, pipe No.8 for me.

That's really nice for #8. Next time, try to make the line on the back of the bowl go from the top to the bottom. You have one line to the top of the shank and another on the bowl on the side of the shank. Take a bit of material off all around the shank and it will look smoother. Keep on making pip...

first post for critique, pipe No.8 for me.

Hello everyone, First, a hearty thank you to all for the WEALTH of information, and ENCOURAGEMENT, and display of skills. Second, thanks for taking a look. This is the eighth pipe I've made, and I think I finally have one worth showing. I'm mostly interested in hearing about shape and general propor...

Re: Smoking?

first post: hello all! I'm smoking a local in store blend called Bourbon Whiskey, never cared for it before, gives me a wicked bite... but tonight I'm smoking it in the 3rd pipe I've made. the first two sit on a shelf, ugly and sad as hell. number 3? I like it. it's progress. it's still a mess, but ...
