Re: Bulldog/Dublin on an undersized lathe

The problem is that with my lathe, when you do that the saddle is under the stummel, and you cut from the left. If you look at the 1st photo in the second set, you can see the shank will not clear the saddle/tool post. A Senior reamer works well as an expanding internal mandrel. DocAitch Same probl...

Re: Wet briar

Weigh it, write that weight on the block. Weigh it again in a few weeks, write that weight on the block. When the weight stops falling (or is fluctuating up/down by a few grams) it's ready. If you want to speed up the drying you can cut/drill the airway and chamber and then let it sit. It's a little...

Re: Bulldog/Dublin on an undersized lathe

Another way to skin a cat. Nicely done.

I have used similar methods to also get around the problem of a small lathe, amazing what you can achieve with some scrap wood, some glue and a little forethought.

There is more contact with finer threads hence greater friction. You need plenty of lube.

Re: What pipe cleaners do you use for staining/ How do YOU apply stain?

Any old pipe cleaner works fine for stain/shellac as you will be wiping the pipe afterwards anyway.

I bought 10,000 extra long pipe cleaners on ebay years ago. They are cheap and cheerful but they work well for applying things to pipes etc.

I don't recall seeing the thread here but I did see it mentioned on facebook that Baldo Baldi had died, I don't remember seeing much of a response there. This is primarily an English speak forum, I doubt many here would have had much/any interaction with Baldi or possibly even known the name? I met ...

Re: My second briar pipe, complete.

Assuming you don't have a massive tenon on that stem then you still have loads of material to work with. Slim that shank to flush up the stem, fix the taper of the stem and tidy up the bowl/shank junction and you will have a much more elegant pipe.

Re: A "Shop Tips and Specific Problem Solutions" playlist...

You know it! haha. The HSS one is a bit of a personal moral crusade for me after I heard of someone throwing away a load of HSS tool and drill bits because they had "blued at the tip" and they assumed were therefore trash, all those tools could have been mine in a workshop clearance but so...

Re: A "Shop Tips and Specific Problem Solutions" playlist...

Interesting video as always. Since I can't post on the video comments, something to note. You don't need to worry about overheating HSS, you will not ruin the temper as you would on a normal tool steel. So grind away without worry, unless you are holding it in your fingers in which case you might wa...

Re: Quick Change Tool Post for wood lathe

Ah ok. They pretty much don't exist, and when you do find one (rare older lathes might have some kind of crosslide setup) they are pretty naff. If you want the features of a metal lathe you need to get a metal lathe.
