Re: Rustic Dublin...

I've been looking at this one some more and I think the shank might look a little better if the top line had just a touch more curve to it. It's a little straight which is making the junction at the back of the bowl look a little more severe than it could. Someone else can tell me if I'm off base he...

Re: Machined pipes.New Factory in Nashville.

Most of us feel the need to stand out of the crowd in one way or another. The pursuit of excellence in any given endeavor is an attempt to separate from the status quo. Most of the time we do it by planting ourselves firmly within some other crowd. In our case, PMF is a good example. Nothing wrong w...

Re: Machined pipes.New Factory in Nashville.

I know that posting 6 pages in qualifies me as properly late to the party, but as one of the newer pipe makers here, This thread has been really interesting. Hopefully a little perspective from a new guy could be helpful... quite possibly it won't be. But maybe you'll indulge me anyhow. First off, l...

I think your execution is excellent. Yours is the best interpretation of the 55 shape I've seen. I still don't like the shape.
 I thought it was funny.
Thanks for the kind words, though.

Re: One tamper to rule them all...

You're not making the most of your situation, JMG... That's a dorsal spine from the rare and deadly Wild New Guinea Ribbox, a segment of fossilized South Pacific Sea Tarantula leg, and the cap is bloodwood stolen from a tribal sacrifice platform. An absolute steal at $2500. (Especially after evadin...

Pipe 18 - '55' commission

I never got around to taking any other good pictures of this one before it shipped out today, but thought I'd post it here anyway. I'm not necessarily looking for critique, as it was a commission and I'd hate for the new owner to stumble across the thread and find out just how crappy his new pipe ac...

Re: Pipe #17 - Acorn

Yeah... This got weird fast. Go pick up your Legos, Micah. On a serious note, I'm glad you said something about the shank being high on the bowl. I felt like that might be the case, but no one said anything, so I though maybe I was crazy. I think you're right. Maybe canting it forward just a touch m...

Re: Pipe #17 - Acorn

Thanks for the feedback! Sorry, I hadn't had a lot of time to respond to anything yet today, and still don't for that matter, but I wanted to hit the high notes anyway. Todd, you're right about the bump at the bottom of the curve on the front. It show the most prominently from that angle, but it's a...

Re: a mini metal lathe?

The first 10 or so pipes I made were made at a friends shop on pretty much that exact lathe. You can indeed make pipes on it, but you will be wanting a bigger lathe sooner rather than later. The swing above the ways is very limiting and the tool carrier is forever in the way. If you turn pipes in a ...

Re: Pipe 16 - Cherrywood

Why did you choose this shank adornment for this pipe? Mainly just to try something different than what I've done so far. I hadn't ever worked with any live plateaux top but I like it when used in moderation. When I was trying to decide what to do with the shank, I saw a scrap of briar setting on t...

Thanks, Jeremiah. The ridge was intentional, but that may or may not have been the right decision. I am struggling getting a good finish on my blasts. You could very well be right about it being due to extra stain...

Re: Pipe 16 - Cherrywood

Thanks fellas! George, I see what you're saying on the stem. Will be rectified post haste. Is the stem length alright? I'm not sure if it isn't a touch short. The other issue that is annoying me is that on the drivers side, the briar band has a very slight gap where it meets the shank... Couldn't se...
