first pipes almost done

http://i36.servimg.com/u/f36/13/36/56/33/1and210.jpg Well, until I get a proper camera, the Blackberry lens is all I can do. Probably good to not get a guy's first couple of pipes in TOO sharp a focus anyway. The bent is a rough copy of a Peterson 315xl. The straight stack I just wanted something r...

Smaller turning tools - these are wicked.

Tracking down small-scale turning tools that are decent quality is not the easiest thing in the world. These are perfect for pipes - I have also done chess sets with them.

Here's the relevant part of the post, and the link from which it was stolen. Copyright to Pease etc etc. One of the first things I'll do after looking at the purely aesthetic beauty of a pipe is remove the stem. In doing so, I discovered the tenon of this pipe to be a bit tighter than I would normal...

Todd, I can't explain the driving force of having perfectly flush mortise floor and tenon faces. However, there are those amongst us who very seldom pull a pipe apart for cleaning. There was a review (I believe by Pease) of a Roush pipe, and he said his one real complaint was that the tenon was a ve...

Acetone does in fact evaporate too fast. It's almost impossible to apply stain in a uniform way.

I wondered if acetone would raise the grain like water but penetrate/dissipate like alcohol.

Tell you what, I will run some tests and post back.

Stain bases... alcohol or...

Anybody try acetone as a stain carrier? It evaporates insanely fast... I was wondering if anybody had tried it on pipes.

Obviously we want carriers that don't leave a residue behind...??

Could be a problem with the motor... Is there any place on the shaft for a fan to mount? A lot of motors have a shaft sticking out of both ends of the armature, one takes the belt or whatever, and one takes a fan (usually in some kind of shroud). If that fan is missing, a motor will overheat surpris...

Thanks for the advice guys.

Wayne, from your web page, I can say definitively that you and I are not in the same market. You must use a much smaller chainsaw than I do.

Linseed oil has a reputation for flammability due to it's tendency to heat up when curing - a bucketful of linseed oil soaked rags will spontaneously combust, once in awhile. The boiled or "treated" version of this oil will harden up when it cures, and this is desireable for a lot of stain...

I suppose it was bound to happen that someday ONE of my ideas wouldn't be so good! The great chess player Tartakover once lost 5 games in a row in a tournament, and when asked what went wrong, he said something like this: In the first game, I had a headache. In the second game, I had a toothache. In...

Pilot hole for chamber?

I tried drilling a pilot hole to help guide the chamber bit, and was really put off by the results... I got a much better cut just sinking the chamber bit into fresh wood. It seemed to rattle around a bit with a pilot hole to guide it. So much for that great idea. Any comments? Do you guys "pre...

You'll get tons of opinions on tobacco chamber shape. We had a discussion on another forum about people's preference regarding conical chambers vs more cylindrical, say, your shape e vs shape c. Lots of guys hated conically drilled bowls, and lots preferred them! I've heard it said that flake-orient...

Reckon if I can generate enough money with a hobby to pay for the hobby, my wife is just pleased to get me out of her hair for an hour a day. Fred, I figure 400,000 is pretty easy - just make 40,000 pipes out of my garage, and get 10 bucks profit on each. It's a can't miss kind of thing! It's not ev...

I make that type of fluting on knife handles, but only by hand. I use round "chain saw" files because they have a constant diameter, i.e. no taper. It looks like that pipe has two flutes. You draw the spiral where you want it with pencil, then go at it with files. If you have a steady han...

Buffing compounds - which and why?

Greetings all. There seem to be all sorts of buffing compounds, but I only see talk of brown tripoli and white diamond compounds, ignoring the black emery, jeweler's rouge, and "all purpose blue compound". I understand that the green compounds are a chromium derivative, and basically a hon...
