Re: sanding pads for multiple uses

yes you swap pads from lower to higher grits, but no, I do not swap pads for different materials - briar and ebonite share pads. I use a sanding "eraser" to clean up a loaded pad.

Re: BBB Pipe question

Given the style of writing/stamping it is quite possible the pipe is a BBB made by A Frankau in France circa 1900 or the small BBB pipe factory at College Pt. NY circa 1915 and not forgetting the BBB's made by Blumfield. The style of the pipe (pictures now removed) had nothing to do with those eras...

I think Kurt needs to add an Evening at the Improv section in the Pipe Making category.

I'm not a big fan of rustication, but this works for me. It's like saggy baggy elephant skin.

Re: Black vs Dark Brown stain

Kris that's better than I managed, but I'm still not fond of the greyish parts... the black vs orange looks great but the washy bits piss me off. Maybe I'm just silly that way. Just sand less after the black stains between grits. Polishing shouldn't gray the transitions between grain patterns if yo...

Re: Black vs Dark Brown stain

I don't have a problem with black as the base. I use Angelus Shoe Dye - Jet Black. I doesn't appear to have any green issues. Here's a close up of a recently finished "contrasty" stain - first black, then light brown. http://i168.photobucket.com/albums/u200/jdiddley/finishcloseups.jpg Not ...

Re: Black vs Dark Brown stain

The other issue with black, even if it's black black, is that when you polish any part of the pipe, you get the wood contrast showing back through, and the black comes across as sort of smoky. This in itself can be really cool, but it tends to look a lot more artificial than a real dark brown. It l...

Re: disc sander backing plate

The Abralon and padded pads are good for finish shaping and finish sanding, but not the best for rough shaping. For rough shaping, a hard backed sanding disc/belt sander deal like this: disc belt sander does the job nice and quick, the belt gets in tighter spots and those weird areas the disc won't ...

Re: Air curing in a basement?

Cigar leaf is air dried, but "pilones" cured. The pilones are piles of fermenting leaf that are rotated and moistened according to ancient oral tradition. Then they are further aged for a few years. A curing chamber mimics the "composting action" of the pilones. You can air dry y...
