Shellac must be used sparingly. I would say, though I may be all wet, that high end pipes seldom have any shellac on them at all. Use it only to set the stain. It should never be the final coating of a pipe finish IMHO.

The theory is that a cake will build up more quickly because of the honey mixture. I'm not sure that has been proven tho.

Are you centering the blade on the rod face? In my practice, I raise the blade just slightly above center.
Are you advancing the blade SLOWLY? I use this setup all the time with no problem.

I bought charcoal powder in bulk from an education supply store. I mix 1 tbs of sour cream with 1 tbs of buttermilk and then add the charcoal to thicken the mixture. This is a very common recipe.
