I agree that is how i normally do the stems. In this case the stem is what they call a fancy, and I call a freehand so there is no shoulder on the stem to seat onto the shank.

I have a #306 stem from PME is it better to drill the briar to fit the tennon already on the stem or to turn the tennon to fit the mortise?

I really like the unevenness of the rustication because nothing in nature has a defined straight line it is always broken. I also like the way it stops before the rim, always have liked that contrast. The only comment that i can make is that as an owner of over 75 Henry Taylor tools is the assult of...

I do appericate the input as I am trying to sharpen my skills as a pipe maker so anytime I make a post feel free to give a honest opinion my skin has gotten pretty thick over the years and have learned the criticisim is the only way to be better

Don't feel like the Lone Ranger I just started shaping a piece of Plateaux from PME tonight and got into a fatal flaw. That piece of briar is now keeping me warm for a few minutes!

Has anyone used the wood dye to tint shellac to give a rusticated pipe a lighter coloed finish ? It has been something I have been pondering for a few days now and if so is there any good base lines for dye to shellac ratio to start from.And will you need more than one coat ( first coat dye shellac ...

Shellac is new for me and have yet to try it but I am going to very soon can you give me a proper mix ratio that would be suitable for pipes
