Welcome!
Jonas makes some of the most impressive pipes I've seen. Very much underrated. To study with him is a huge advantage.

Re: Submission for your Critique
Don't take this the wrong way, but I think your reach exceeded your grasp on this particular pipe. I can see in the general composition that you have an eye that can be developed, but you need to understand your medium before you can create in the real world what you see in your mind's eye. My advic...

Re: Selling your first pipe
Make it a priority to go to a show. Preferably not Chicago for the first one; there's too much there to absorb without some prep. The NASPC show in Columbus is a medium sized show in driving range of many great carvers. I get requests from random folks to drop in all the time. I'm sure other carvers...

Re: Here Is A Straight Dublin With A Bent Stem For Your Critique
Two things stick out to me like a sore thumb: 1. You need to break the edge around the chamber. Not only will this help minimize charring from the occasional misdirected flame, it will give the pipe a more finished appearance, and make the rim easier to keep clean. 2. The stem/shank junction isn't a...

It takes character to admit when you've made a mistake, a lesson I should reacquaint myself with. You have my respect.

Re: Selling your first pipe
I can't give you specific guidance, but I can tell you what I did with regard to pricing. I, like you, had pipes stacking up early on, but I needed to recoup the cost otherwise I wouldn't be able to afford to continue to buy materials. I sold my first pipes for $30 - $45. Of course back then I was o...

Re: Going to try bamboo.
Well, George invoked my name so I guess I'll chime in. I really don't mess with bamboo that much, but there are a bunch of ways to skin that cat. A lot depends on your tooling, what look you want to achieve, and how much you care about the longevity of the pipe. As for your specific questions: 1. Yo...

What an excellent little shape! Great work, as usual, on the stem, George!

Re: PITH 2020!
I think it might be a good idea to see the composition of the participants before selecting a theme. If there are more newbies a classic theme seems like a good way to go ie billiard, bulldog, apple. If there are enough pros/semi pros we might want to pick something more interesting. Anyone remember...

Re: Before I stain this, what is the good/crap ratio of the rustication?
Consistent texture at an even depth is fine, but what kicked up my rustication a notch (back when I was doing it) was making the pattern and depth more random. Go super deep in spots, mix tools to rusticate. I used various dremel tools to carve some deep grooves and trails and then went over the who...

Re: Stamping Company Logos on Ebonite & Acrylic Stems (video set)
I've always wondered whether or not to get some brand stamps. What stopped me in the past was the expense and the potential ethical conundrum. Someone still owns the rights to the names of all these pipe brands. It was my understanding that repairmen in the past had to be licensed to officially add ...

Re: Bo Nordh stem replacement
Excellent work as usual. I'm no greenhorn, but I think I'd be nervous working on a pipe almost as expensive as half a year of my salary. I'm not sure what that says about me....or my salary.

Re: Making a "Hot Rod" Pipe (video set)
Looks like fun! When I saw the multitude of dots I couldn't stop laughing! I've done the same sorts of things in the past with pipes that had I couldn't sell on the website for whatever reason. It's a great way to learn with little pressure. Correct me if I'm wrong, but didn't Downie have a, for lac...

This has been done for several weeks, but I just now have the photos. Pretty basic Dublin with an extra long stem, the ring is made from purple heart.

Holy Moly! I love panels, but they are a royal pain to make and an even more royal pain to repair. Excellent work, as usual.
