Re: Tool Size

Thank you Tyler. I would visit each one but they are all a good distance away from me.
Guess I will visit the first link and than maybe this Logan lathe. From reading earlier threads, it seems that Logan lathes are very good.

One last lathe to consider!
Seems small but it looks like a great deal!

Michigan, Ohio, Indiana Pipe Makers?

Awesome :) Even Chicago is close! I'd love to meet up with some of you guys eventually and chat over a good smoke somewhere. Discuss pipe making. Maybe in a month or two, set up a time/place to meet for anyone willing to make the drive to wherever it'd be. Just an idea. Regards, Frank "Without ...

Michigan, Ohio, Indiana Pipe Makers?

Hey everybody,

I am curious to know whether or not any of you happen to be from Michigan, Ohio, or Indiana. It would be great to have other pipe makers relatively nearby to me (I am in Michigan).
Maybe I will luck out and you will all be from Michigan!

Re: Tool Size

Alright I will poke around some more. Any good brands for lathes that you know of? Currently I am looking at these two metal lathes: http://annarbor.craigslist.org/tls/3313649431.html http://centralmich.craigslist.org/tls/3252559760.html http://nmi.craigslist.org/for/3275919894.html Let me know what...

Tool Size

Hey everyone, Although I have access to a friends shop, I am still in the market to obtain my own power tools. I am curious as to whether or not there is a particular size lathe and band saw that most pipe makers use. I would assume that a smaller lathe is okay but I am not entirely sure. Figured at...

Rev,

If you don't make your own though, aren't you than subject to using already made stems?
If so, I thought that was generally avoided...?

J.H Lowe vs Pimo

wdteipen,

I figured it'd be best to find cheaper alternatives that are just as effective. Will have to get one of Tim West's French wheels though!

Greetins!

Rev,

Thanks I appreciate the warm welcome!
Other than figuring out what else I need and coming to the realization that the wood lathe available to me won't be as efficient as a metal lather, I am ready to start!
Guess I'll be happy with what I have for now and work with it :)

Bulldog? Rodesian? My 20th

Squat bulldog is what I see. According to Brian Levine, a bulldog has the two distinctive horizontal lines going around the bowl and has a diamond shank. Based on these specifications I'd say that due to the squat bowl that it is indeed a squat bulldog.

Re: Things I do(mainly knives, pic heavy!)

Wow! You are very talented at making knives, and I don't believe that you should be saying you can't make pipes yet. Clearly you have a lot of talent working with wood if you can achieve a pipe out of using so little! Send me a knife lol I need one for opening YABO's and YAPO's on my YouTube channel...

J.H Lowe vs Pimo

Hey everyone, Browsing through different supply websites has revealed to me that many of these sites happen to carry similar products. Both J.H. Lowe and Pimo offer tenon cutters and mortise drill tools for example. What I would like to ask, is whether or not one brand happens to produce a more reli...

Hey everyone, My name is Frank and I guess this is my formal "hello" to this online community! I have been a pipe smoker for nearly one year now, and more recently I have been drawn to pipe crafting after being amazed by the craftsmanship that I see presented by many artisans on Facebook. ...

Re: Which Sand paper is best?

I didn't end up getting a straight answer from this thread lol
While I know the decision of sandpaper is entirely opinionated I didn't catch the general consensus.
Was it decided that Norton is good or Sia?

Guess I will try them both as I start working on my project.
