Re: First completed pipe

What equipment do you have to work with? Hi Premal, I have a small enco metal lathe, band saw, shaping wheels (vfd connected), a small belt sander, a few files (I need more specific ones...was recently reading a post here on files), emery boards, hand sand. I have two chucks and have been strugglin...

Re: First completed pipe

Ummm.... I hate you. This looks better than my 10th pipe  Thanks Calsbeek. It's my first "completed" pipe. Many catastrophic failures before I got one what had all its parts and is functional. I have many bowls without shanks. Lol. Best-Tom Sent from my SAMSUNG-SM-N910A using Tapatalk

Re: Submitted to the Gallery by one of the world's...

Castello? It's a Castello. Model 65, in fact, which is one of their trademark shapes. I didn't intend to make this a "guess what brand?" thing, though. Just that one of the world's best known makers produced and shipped it. Widely regarded as a "high grade" maker. Or maybe David...

Re: First completed pipe

I think this is an outstanding first pipe. You did a reasonable job with the stummel, cut your own stem from rod, and sand blasted it. Only took me 40+ years to reach that stage. :D Now you have to dial things in as Jeremiah and George have pointed out. I did notice that you have been a member for ...

Re: First completed pipe

There's a lot to like here. :D The nits: - What Sandahl said. - Don't try to re-invent the wheel with a large radius button-to-bite-zone transition. It's been tried many times, and buyers don't like it. (Only Baldo Baldi gets away with it, and his stuff is from a different planet, anyway.) - Don't ...

Re: First completed pipe

There's no shot of a 100% dead-on profile, so it's harder to see. Your bowl/shank junction is fuzzy and the shank is not round at the face. It's not bad for a first pipe. Thanks Jeremiah. Let me see if I can get better profile shots. When you say "fuzzy", do you mean not crisp or defined ...

Re: Slot Cutting

LL hinted at a slot cutting template in a recent post, so I had to give it a shot. I used a Strong Tie ($2 t Home Depot), drilled and filed a 1/16" x 1/2" slot, made a V channel from scrap, cut some shims, and C clamped my drilled rod in place. https://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/800x600q90...

Re: Blind side shaping

I am working on my 61st- 74th pipes this century and do most of my final shaping with files. Changing the angle, switching hands, sitting, standing and looming over the work and twisting backward, and holding the piece against my chest and filing are all things that I do to reach the blind side. Sw...

Re: Blind side shaping

I just recently made myself a French wheel and mounted the motor much lower than where the 36 grit wheel sits on my lathe. I've found that between looking down on the disc and bring able to hold the workpiece lower without the lathe bed getting in the way, I get a decent view of the blind side if I...

Re: Blind side shaping

I just use the opposite side of the french wheel. I would reverse spin on the VFD if it were a significant issue. Practice and taking it slow like Chris said is your best bet. Cool Wayne, I tried using the opposite side of my wheel, but forgot about basic shop safety. I didn't reverse the rotation....

Re: Blind side shaping

I know that doesn't help your situation a lot, but I am afraid it is the simple answer to a lot of these types of questions, the old phrase still holds true, practise makes perfect. FWIW that is looking good, especially for a first pipe. It does help and it's nice to be reminded that while I'm so f...
