Re: Billiard #3
So I'm wondering are there techniques for 'seeing' these things before the pipe is done? Yup. It's the single most important thing you can do if you're shooting to make top grade, collectible pipes (as opposed to merely tobacco access devices), in fact. It mostly concerns shaping. Do your absolute ...

Re: Billiard #3 Re-done
I drill the slot using a 1/16" drill after I have drilled the tenon end with a taper bit to about 3/4" inch of the slot. Then I use a VFH slot cutting tool to I then use a number of Otto Frei small files to expand the slot to what I consider is the correct width. I find that It's real eas...

Re: Delrin tenon failure avoidance
Looks like it wasn't in there really far either - what, like maybe 5/16"? I've been trying to bury mine about 3/8" at the barest minimum, and have been using the good ol' slot-cutting Dremel 199 to cut 1-1.5mm diagonal slots all around it. I've had really good results with the JB Weld &quo...

Re: Why so little activity here?
As someone going through 'the process' here, I think that the folks here do a really great job of not only not pulling punches but also tailoring the level of the feedback to the skill of the carver - so that the critique always has value no matter where you're at. And I do think that most of the fo...

RickB, I found that if you use a piece of old pantyhose, knee highs like my wife wears when she is wearing slacks to work, (Don't laugh) a piece of silk, rayon; that kind of material that the Wood Turner's finish goes on very smooth without looking like a WWI no man's land and you can put multiple ...

I do really get a kick out of people posting things on the PMF FB page ("The Facebook home of PipeMakersForum.com.") like "where can I go to learn more about pipe making?" I have a hard time turning the sarcasm off on that one, but I've been mostly trying to keep myself in line :...

I absolutely love the fact that the instructional tone/video/etc. is identical to the pipe repair videos. Fantastic.

Re: Kansas City Carving Contest NEXT MONTH
Damn, didn't realize this was going to be the last one. I'd really wanted to enter this one year, but I'm just not there yet.
We'll see if I miraculously end up feeling awesome about anything I make before then, but I doubt it. I'll pick up some tickets though.

Re: Making a "Hot Rod" Pipe (video set)
Pretty damn cool, and yep I laughed my ass off at the dots too. So I've been doing a 5/32" tapered bit from the tenon to about an inch from the button end, a 1/16" through to the end, and then cutting that out to a fairly deep funnel on the button side (because I'd gotten the impression it...

Really cool stuff. I've always wanted to learn that, but I have a feeling I've about expended the good graces of the missus with regards to hobbies  And yep it definitely took a minute to realize it wasn't full of sparks and lasers. Regardless, the polish does really interesting and beautiful t...

Re: A billiard for comment/critique please
Definitely better. When you're carving the front (or back ;) ) of the bowl - the chin, in either regard - mark a point on the underside of the center of the chamber. That's where the chin starts, and then everything behind that through the shank should be dead flat. You'll want to bring that back (o...

Re: Concave and Convex Lines
If we go back to pipes themselves as art, or pieces with intrinsic attractive value, we can talk about where those values come from. Assume that the following is true: offered chimp porn or food, a captive male chimpanzee with starve to death with an erection. It doesn't have to be true for the ide...

That's looking great. I love that style of dublin but haven't tried one - I can't ever get the lines to look right when I try drawing them.ricebiscuit wrote: ↑Mon Aug 05, 2019 11:16 am Well I’m now on PITH #3. #1 & #2 both had issues. Trying to meet the deadline but I may be a few days late- here is a progress/proof of life photo.

Re: Twist drill bowl bits
I wonder if those fluted drills are custom made for RK or are available on the open market. Might be nice to replace some of my homemade bits. I believe Yu Xuanjie sells them through his IG as well: https://www.instagram.com/yuxuanjie7603/?hl=en Also has some other cool stuff on there, but I have n...

Re: Twist drill bowl bits
I haven't tried the spoons bits (or any of them), but I'm also still a drill-first-exclusively scrub so I haven't tried any of them. At that sale price I'm giving the set a pretty hard look though, personally.

tungsten carbide chamber bits Do tell! Re: Twist drill bowl bits
I'd made one from a big S&D bit but it scrubbed and burned and stuck, largely because I suck at grinding tools and don't know what the hell I'm doing (even when given clear instructions). I've since switched to the tungsten carbide chamber bits and have no intention of going back.
