A Castello 293 Riff
Hi All, I'm not posting this for a critique. It's a commission for a respected smoker/collector/maker so I'd prefer the commentary offline (and I've gotten plenty, lol, but feel free to blast me in a PM if you want :)). I do have a reason to post this though, a tip that may help someone: Try somethi...

Re: Pimo tool
I don't remember if mine is the PME or the Pimo one but I think they are the same thing, either way it's sitting in a box, on a shelf, out in the shop and I haven't used it in a long time. Take whatever the new cost + their shipping and divide that in half. Whatever that is I'll sell you my used one...

Re: Strawberry NoseWarmer
A really easy way to get a deep shine on a blast, is to load the carnuba wheel heavily. Buff with some pressure, until you can see flecks of wax everywhere. Then you can take a heat gun, and gently(careful not to burn the briar) melt all the wax. Let it cool, and you should be good to go. Nice, tha...

http://www.maxtool.com/belaire-5-hp-80-gallon-208-230v-1-phase-vertical-two-stage-electric-compressor-13-75-acfm-at-175-psi This belaire is only 1189 delivered and is just a little less cfm. I never lose pressure with it. The one you have listed is better. Premal posted this before when I was doing...

Re: Strawberry NoseWarmer
Thanks much. I use to use this method on rusticated pipes but I went to something else and have not tried renaissance on a blasted yet. I'll give it a go on the next one. 10 years Army = I can spit shine. LOL!oklahoma red wrote:Try Renaissance wax and a horse hair shoe brush. Yes, the petroleum smell goes away.

Re: Strawberry NoseWarmer
Hey guys thanks for the comments! It's definitely the small pipe effect making the stem and button look big. Remember it's only 4" long and it's a close up pic. I use a very old set of calipers that measure in 1/32" of an inch. I stopped with the files as soon as I showed under 5/32" ...

Re: Strawberry NoseWarmer
Cool stuff Bill!! Love strawberry wood too, tons of fun! Thanks Nate :) That Strawberry sure is fun and easy to work with. I made a really really small one from the remnants of the block this pipe came from so I could try one myself and it smokes 5100 like a champ, a very sweet smoke (prolly in my ...

Strawberry NoseWarmer
I'm going to take Scottie's advise in >this thread< and share my most recent commissioned pipe I made over the weekend and mailed out this morning. A smidge over 4" in length and a smidge over an ounce. http://www.billboylepipes.com/uploads/8/9/3/2/8932036/223127_orig.jpg http://www.billboylepi...

Re: Posting Your Pipes For Critique
As a hobbyist who doesn't get much time for pipe making (Full time job and family) I've watched Scottie progress rapidly following this and even though I seldom if ever give a critique, or even ask for that matter, I would really highlight this if I may: If you are going to give feedback to another ...

Re: Madrone Wood?
Thanks Scottie :) I love blasting, how it pulls the patterns out and everything, just fun. I am really glad I test blasted a thin slice of cut off from the block first though. That Berry is so much softer than most briar, I still had my pressure at 120 and I blasted little holes right through the te...

Re: Madrone Wood?
Thanks Matt. I finished up my first strawberry over the weekend. A nose warmer, just a smidge over 4" and 1 ounce. http://www.billboylepipes.com/uploads/8/9/3/2/8932036/223127_orig.jpg I made a block out of some of the Madrone I have as well: http://www.billboylepipes.com/uploads/8/9/3/2/893203...

Re: Madrone Wood?
I wonder if they will smoke the same as well? I turned my first strawberry block the other night and if time allows I will turn a stem and make the pipe this weekend. I'm looking forward to trying the Madrone now, it will be neat to compare pictures to see the difference between madrone burl and mad...

Re: Madrone Wood?
It's actually pretty neat how much the stuff twists and moves as it dries and people take advantage of that. They will turn a bowl or some other piece when it's wet and let it twist into fantastic forms as it dries. That is very cool. I look forward to seeing you use some Madrone burl on a pipe, or...

Re: Madrone Wood?
Thanks Ryan, that helps, appreciate it. I doubt if my wife would have appreciated me boiling it in her kitchen for a day :) It's dry and crack free but it is either a trunk, or a branch section, and not burl. I had the same thought that most likely burl was used for pipes however I thought since app...

Madrone Wood?
Madrone, aka, madrona wood, is indigenous to the North West Coast of the US\lower Canada and there is quite a bit of it near where I live. Turners use it for bowls, pens, etc. It was commonly used in the past for tobacco pipes locally and I have had quite a few local puffers ask me if I ever use it....
