Re: Concave and Convex Lines
Oh boy.... This is a can of worms, but I think as an intellectual discussion is worth pursuing. I certainly sympathize with the thought that, at it's core, there is something objective to beauty. Whether this is evidence of a Divine architecture or some idiosyncratic remnant from our ancestoral liza...

At this stage in my pipe making career I'm looking for anything that can take strain off of my rapidly deteriorating wrists. This seems like it might help. Thanks for the great video, George!

Re: Stinky Pipe
I really wish we had smell-o-grams. I'm dying of curiosity. Perhaps we should play 20 questions about the nature of the smell? Is it a chemical smell, or does it smell like something rotting? I know personally that I can taste and smell Danish oil finishes on pipes that haven't been cured properly. ...

Re: Replacing lost vulcanite stem material (video set)
This raises all sorts of questions for the retail/swap/sell/trade pipe economy. I've seen stem patches like this on occasion, some well done, others not so much. When done correctly, this process can be used to completely conceal a major stem issue that would only become apparent after the stem star...

I'm in!
I've only missed one in the past eight rounds. I still regret it.
As for themes, perhaps incorporation of natural plateau in the design? I don't think we've done a Dublin either.

Re: Repairing a charred briar chamber (video set)
Great tips as always, George. It does open Pandora's box to folks who can effectively conceal interior damage. As often as some pipes trade hands a pipe so treated may not be discovered for several owners. Amateur question here. So what's the difference between this and adding a waterglass bowl coat...

Re: Why so little activity here?
Having been on here long enough to be considered a veteran (not nearly as long as Sas; that guy's a freaking dinosaur), most of what could possibly be discussed has been discussed. How to get a good polish on stinky Ebonite, what kind of compressor is appropriate to sandblast, or how to tell if your...

Re: Acrylic vs Ebonite
Juma is a great alternative. Black doesn't shine up as well as Ebonite or acrylic and is heavier than the two, but it is easy to work with. I think Chris uses a lot of polyester (correct me if I'm wrong), which is much softer than acrylic but is chippy to machine and doesn't hold a bend well.

Re: Silver Tenon
If you're going for some sort of nice little Easter egg detail for the customer a better option might be a silver ring inlaid on the shank face. There is no telling what sort of long term issues a solid silver tenon may create in the future.

Re: Topping & Refinishing an English Pipe (video set)
When I top a bowl I follow essentially the same procedure, but knowing how to make the nomenclature look good after sanding is a great tip. I usually just avoid the nomenclature, but that can lead to some staining problems. Another great video series, George!

This is simply another example of how the "school" of pipemakersforum works. If you follow all the advice in this archive your pipes will improve. I wonder if Tyler and Kurt knew they were raising the standard for a high quality pipe in North America, and maybe even improving quality world...

Re: Tip or Not?
I certainly wouldn't discourage a tip, but I'd rather you buy another pipe. I would never expect a tip from my customers. What I would really like people to consider more is becoming a "patron" of a certain carver. I've got two or three customers who really save my bacon by basically sayin...

I've been done with mine for a week or two now. I'm working on another, just because I wanted to try a more traditional take on the author. Probably won't finish that one, but regardless, I'm still on board. On a side note, I haven't been participating much in the thread this year (been busier than ...

Another great series of videos, George! A few quick questions. I didn't see the pipe in hand and this method is dependent on the pipe's geometry, but wouldn't it have been possible to tie the stummel and the new extension together with a tube of delrin? And if that holds true couldn't you have chuck...
