Re: aspen burl

Cool, did you send it away to have it stabilized or did you do it yourself somehow? And is stabilizing done before or after the wood is dry? The oak I stabilized myself but I have sent wood to be professionally stabilized as well. I have a small vacuum stabilizing setup I got from Turntex Wood work...

Re: aspen burl

In my opinion it is definitely worth saving. It would make awesome knife handles. I've stabilized basically rotten white oak (lighter than balsa) and it works and looks great.

Re: SHOP SAFETY!!!!!

I find the band saw much more intimidating. I've heard this from a number of people and it is always interesting to me. I feel the exact opposite, the tables saw is a much scarier tool to me. With a bandsaw, as long as the workpiece is supported, I can take my hands away from what I am cutting, if ...

Wow! Thanks everyone. I didn't realize there was a thread of the year, but since there apparently is  here a little bit more to clinch it for sure. Sliced the bacon last night. http://i266.photobucket.com/albums/ii249/jthompson1995/F088CED6-7B21-4C0E-B499-2E739D7CA91A_zpsotwttwbw.jpg http://i2...

Bacon!

My first try at homemade bacon. Ended up with just under 12 1/2 lbs of slab bacon from a 13 1/2 lb belly. Dry cure applied and vacuum sealed. Three flavors (L to R): cracked black pepper, brown sugar & bourbon, and maple using homemade maple syrup. http://i266.photobucket.com/albums/ii249/jthomp...

Re: drilling and facing curved bamboo

You'll be better off eyeballing it at first then checking with a straight edge after the cut. You'll be able to judge if it's high on the edges or in the middle and make a very small adjustment cut accordingly. If you can't get 90 exactly, a VERY slight undercut is better.

Re: PITH 2015

I'm in and good with the end of June. As far as shapes go, maybe try a 1/2 bent or more as the last two were straighter shapes generally.

Or a sitter.

Or bamboo shank.

Hell, I don't know.

Re: Blasting

You shouldn't have any problems with dust as long as you have a good dust collector attached to the cabinet. Most dust collectors will pull far more air out of the cabinet than you are putting in through the blast gun. I did have to put a little blanket padding over the vent to keep some media from ...

Re: Osage Orange Bowl

They grow quite a bit slower around here and are much less common. I have made a few pipes from some I was given that has 30-40 rings from the top to the bottom of the bowl. Gorgeous stuff.

Be warned that bowl turning can be just as addictive as pipe making.

Very nice. Osage is one of my favorite woods. Makes nice pipes too.

That tree was very happy before it was cut. Look at the size of those rings!

Re: 9mm Filter?

Todd, you may be best served by getting a few different brands of 9mm filter as they are not all quite the same size so you can be sure to accommodate any brand. Or check and see if your customer prefers a specific brand and make the pipe to fit that brand of filter. The first filter pipe I ever mad...

Kind of kidding on that one. (Kind of). It parallels something my grandfather purportedly used to say "if it's worth doing, it's worth doing right". Unfortunately I never got the chance to know my grandfather as he passed when I was 9 months old from lung cancer (cigarette smoker). He was ...

Re: And another Dublin

If someone were to make a simple cast, placed some small pieces of wood into it, and them melted some acrylic into it, would they have a similar material or a mutated globby piece of turd stick? I'm not a plastics expert but I have done a fair bit of casting wood into polyester and urethane resins ...
