Re: Detailed, well-shot, mini-documentary of Former at work
Pretty incredible. I remember someone (maybe Sas, though probably more than one of you) saying that what was amazing about great pipe makers isn't just that they end up with a better end result than us newer folks, they get there in a quarter (or in Former's case, about a tenth) the time.

Re: PITH 2019!!!
How is everyone doing? There are a few that are requesting more time and I suggest maybe we extend to August 10 or a later date. What do you all think? https://scontent-iad3-1.cdninstagram.com/vp/f23c6ee16290a363585717e4f3ec5a45/5DABF288/t51.2885-15/e35/65833882_453371478793257_4607120270314200938_...

It's like I tell my 4-year-old all the time - there's a difference between knowing how something is done and knowing how to do itLatakiaLover wrote:Gee... I dunno...
I was just moved to repeat the word "practice" three times for no reason.
Impossible to explain... LSD in the air, maybe?

Re: PITH 2019!!!
When a shooting contest's target is any tree on a wooded hillside, it's hard to miss. The reason this board has (strongly!) recommended that aspiring carvers avoid flights of fancy until they've absorbed the fundamentals---and can demonstrate that fact with examples---is to avoid the shitshow that ...

Re: PITH 2019!!!
Although I do personally believe we should restrict the category slightly by saying "No 'Danish' freehands". You see the PITH is all about becoming a better pipe carver. If there is ever a "shape" abused by new carvers it's the "freehand", where they just make somethin...

Re: PITH 2019!!!
However, I've experimented in the last week or so with one where I left just a ring of plateaux around the outside edge of the bowl, and then sanded the between that ring and the chamber hole. Some great birdseye was exposed, and this looks great. That looks awfully nice and was more or less where ...

Zulu would be fun. I've got a little Derby one that's probably a pretty shitty pipe but I'm fond of it and have been thinking about trying to copy it for awhile.Doug535 wrote:I'm in and I'll throw Zulu in the mix. Been wanting to give it a go.

Re: PITH 2019!!!
Michael is sending out the second pipe he made to me and I will forward to Janka. He went through some personal things during that time and all seems to be good now. That's great. I mean - sucks about the personal stuff but glad it's getting resolved, and again - first and foremost I hope he's okay...

I'm (probably) in. I've slowed down to about 2 months a pipe since my second kiddo got here, but I'd like to participate again if I'm able to do so.
I know y'all did oval shank a couple years back, but with all of our "go carve 100 billiards" mantras here, how about a regular old billiard?

Re: Why so little activity here?
Yep - that. Occasionally folks will wander over here from the Facebook page (or the pipe making section of various other forums) if they're really serious about learning how to make good pipes - and it will briefly explode with activity again until said individual gets a feel for what they need to b...

Re: Acrylic vs Ebonite
I am 100% willing to experiment with alternatives to ebonite. Any of my pipes I keep at this point (which is maybe 1 in 3ish) gets the absolute shit smoked out of it. For some reason I just don't feel as inclined to take great care of my ugly ducklings and will smoke them multiple times a day, every...

That's awesome. We used bone for nuts in my old luthier apprentice days and I'd thought it might make a nice ivory substitute. Sturdy stuff and polishes nicely.
