Re: Uruss
Howdy You'll find that social media-y stuff has gone virtually extinct here (it was common until IG, FB, etc. came along), but hardcore feedback on project photo sets is alive and well. It's also a good place for finding solutions to specific problems (the catch being that word "specific")...

Re: Hello all from Kansas
I have my great-grandfathers tool chest, passed down to me from my Father, that contains many old hand drills, files, saws etc. It may take me a ton of time, but once I have learned the basics of shaping from a pre-drilled block, I would love to craft a pipe from briar block using only these tools....

Re: the shape of a billiard pipe
ALL methods of pipe making are 100% subtractive, only the tools used to remove material varies. Meaning, making a classic shape by hand is entirely possible, it just takes longer. The best advice I can give is to "evenly and constantly shrink" the stummel as opposed to cut the front line t...

No worries.
Don't use it for something like a chamber patch/fill, but other than that you'll be fine.

Hangin' in there, Old School style.
The swarm of non-BB options has diluted the back-and-forth here a lot, but it's still the best RESOURCE on the Interweb.

Re: bent dublin
A bit of undercut on the stem's step thingie would provide some visual "motion" in the right direction. (it's stupid-hard to draw freehand with this $1.99 software, so this is just to show you what I'm referring to... This is not the "exactly ideal" angle, sharpness, etc.) . http...

True: My mom used to tell stories about how irritatingly determined I was to do stuff with my hands as a kid. Like really determined, and really early. When I was still three years old, in fact, she'd bring home 50 cent (about five bucks in today's money) reject walnut gunstock blanks from a nearby ...

Re: New Facebook presence and other fun announcements
Some subjects are best handled with linear (threaded) discussion and lots of clear photos. Pipe making is one of them. FB and its siblings are designed---literally---to be a limbic system activator/feedback loop. An addictive mechanism that people will plug into like those hoardes on a Vegas casino ...

Floral leather carving...
...was something I did when I was 12-13 years old. Can't remember why it appealed to me, only that I took a crafts class in Junior high school in the 7th (or 8th?) grade and leatherwork was on the menu along with metal stuff, ceramics, and etc. Anyway, my grandmother's sister lived deep in Texas and...

lol Lee Von Erck actually does that. A live feed/realtime sort of camera setup that overlooks his shop with the main bench in the foreground. It turns out there's a lot of one-upmanship in the Japanese collecting world (Lee's main fanbase), and guys are willing to pay significantly more for pipes th...

Re: An "English" Billiard.
But basically nobody here, myself included, manages a billiard this good. HA! All that fur must be choking off your eyeballs or something... I whipped out a spot-on perfect billiard just this morning, thank you very much. Naturally, I put a tiny smidge of myself into it so people would know i...

Rare, old, and VERY cool
There was such skill and pride back then. The lines are amazing. The execution is flawless. Completely serious: I don't think there are but a handful of top-level guys in the world who could duplicate it, given all the time they wanted/needed. The kicker? It was a mass production item at the time. (...

Spectacularly horrible design AND materials --- true WTF
OK, this is nuts. The stem is locked as solidly as if it were glued into the extension, because the mortise and tenon were made from the same material. What happened is not literally the same as vacuum welding, but it's functionally the same, and not just a known danger of using like materials in a ...

Dunhill 1954 patent Tanshell shape 475 re-stem and refinish
Nothing particularly special happening here, but felt the need to post it because the pipe is MINE, dammit! 8) It's within days of being my birthyear, is a patent Tanshell (rare), one of my favorite shapes, and my favorite Dunhill finish. Found it a few months ago online and fina...

Re: Pipe #4 – Bent Brandy
Some side view stuff: The yellow line is the bowl's top line, the red is where your stem is now, and the green line is where a "Brit classic" should be. Slightly overbent is one of those optical trick things like a forward-canted bowl. Straight looks strangely wrong. It's the same with ste...
