Re: Anyone ever make a french wheel?

Perfect! Thanks guys. I have some acrylic sheeting, and was going to get a few hole saws to cut the circular discs. I was thinking of making the outer padded circle 4 inches in diameter, and the inner circle that holds the sandpaper on 3 1/2 inches in diameter. Do you guys think those measurements w...

Anyone ever make a french wheel?

Have any of you guys ever made your own french wheel or detail sanding disc?
If so, does anyone have a schematic that they would be willing to share?

I know that J.Alan makes them, but I am not ready to spend that much money on french wheels if I could possibly make them on my own.

Split Stems

I was wondering if anyone could answer a question that I believe I already know the answer to, but would just like a few more experienced opinions. I am looking at making my first split stem. I am going to turn a tenon on my ebonite, and then drill a hole in my other material of the same exact size ...

Re: Tutorial for accent rings in stems.

I am thinking about adding some additional accents to my accent ring stems. Has anyone ever used knife spacer material to add very small accent rings on their stems? http://www.texasknife.com/vcom/product_info.php?cPath=587_729_731&products_id=1962 or http://www.texasknife.com/vcom/product_info....

Re: Importance of Shellac ??

So i have been experimenting with shellac lately, and have found that i am having trouble getting it to apply evenly. I have tried: -brushing it on, then attempting to sand down the high spots - brushing it on, then wiping it off after 5 seconds, then applying multiple coats -thinning the shellac to...

Re: Importance of Shellac ??

="oklahoma red" I apply several light coats of the latter (fine sanding in between if needed) then buff. I have three different grades of Menzerna compounds and can usually skip the coarsest (equal to brown Trip). When you say fine sanding in between coats of finish, I assume you are refe...

Re: Importance of Shellac ??

Yeah you need to build up the understand slowly. To answer the question, yes, I would go directly to shellac after top staining, and I know there are people who mix shellac and the top stain and do this in one pass. Interesting. I never thought of mixing the stain and the shellac. Might have to try...

Re: Acrylic stems with Pimo Tool issue

Ok that's a good idea. I will try taking material off with other tools and then use the tenon tool for the final cutting. Do you ever apply any oil to the wood lathe track to keep the tail stock sliding easily? If so what should I apply?

Acrylic stems with Pimo Tool issue

Hey guys, I just recently started using acrylic blanks for stems, and have been having an issue getting my tenons to look smooth after turning. I am using the PIMO tenon tool to turn the tenons. What happens is i get little gouges in the tenon, almost as if the cutter isn't cutting the tenon smoothl...

Re: Importance of Shellac ??

After you guys have applied your understand, sanded it off, and applied the top layer of stain, is there any step in between the last layer of stain and applying shellac? I'm assuming not, as introducing tripoli or white diamond to the surface of the wood prior to sealing it with the shellac would b...

Re: Lathe Chuck Advice.

Only issue for me is I only have a wood lathe at the moment. I have a oneway chuck at the moment with some smokingdawg jaws for briar. Id like to be able to work on blocks and stems without having to take the jaws off of the chuck each time i switch between the two, so i thought id get a second chuc...

Re: Lathe Chuck Advice.

Ok so i am about ready to order a second chuck ( nova g3) and a set of jaws for square acrylic, (pen jaws) but was wondering how most of you hold round rod stock in your chucks? Do you use any specific jaws, or do you try to center it in the chuck without any specific jaws on the chuck itself and us...

Re: Wood lathe drill bit wobble

So I tried facing the wood and then drilling, and I still have a wobble. I looked more closely at the headstock, and the headstock handwheel has a bad wobble. Does anyone else have this issue? Looking more closely at it, and looking directly down the inside of the spindle, I see that it wobbles and ...

Re: Wood lathe drill bit wobble

I feel like there is some play in the drill chuck arbor where it sits in the tailstock. I have a hard time getting the drill chuck to seat tightly, and sometimes when drilling, the bit will catch in the wood, and the entire chuck will spin inside the tailstock. I have to really push the chuck and ar...

Re: Wood lathe drill bit wobble

Sometimes the workpiece being off center and not facing before drilling can lead to drilling off center. Steps I would take to try: 1. Rough in the shank before drilling (at least to make sure it's round) 2. Make sure you have the stummel locked in tight. 3. Make sure your drill bits are true and s...

Wood lathe drill bit wobble

I have a new Jet 1015-vs lathe that have all assembled and securely bolted and level. I tried to drill my first pipe, and got a lot of drill bit wobble. I have checked live centers in the tail stock and headstock, and everything matches up. I took apart the Oneway chuck I was using and reassembled i...

Are the jaws I make perfect? No. Are they the best out there? No. Are they the cheapest? Perhaps not. Do they work? Yes!
Steve, Thanks again for all of the help. I look forward to the jaws coming in, and giving them a try!
