Re: button height
It can't hurt to make a button too tall. It can always be taken down to the size the customer enjoys. If it's not tall enough for the customer, there's nothing that can be done, other than making a new stem.

Re: thickness of stem behind button
I imagine the answer is "stick it in your mouth and see if it's comfortable yet", eh? Yes! Tom Eltang told me at my first Chicago Show, "Make your taper much more gradual. Stick it in your mouth. If it's not comfortable for you, it won't be comfortable for someone else." :) Rad

Re: bamboo poker
Rad, basically a very short maybe 1/8" shank then straight into bamboo? I don't mean literally 1/2 inch, because I don't know how long that part is from just looking at the pic. Do what Charl said. :) Make the shank 1/2 as long, and make it flair into the bowl to match the flair of the bamboo ...

Re: bamboo poker
Shorten the briar portion of the shank by about 1/2 inch, and it would look a whole lot better.

Could that pipe have been made better? Always.
Is there anything wrong with that pipe? No.
Hope this helps.

Re: dublin with faux horn
Joe, that's a fine looking pipe, but I recognize the stem material. I made a stem of it once, and it kept collapsing under very weak jaw pressure. Heating it restored the shape, but then it finally it just came apart in my teeth.
Test it before you sell it.

Re: For your health
For those of you that think I'm full of shit, today I'm not. Today I had a colonoscopy and am all cleaned out! On a serious note, this is something all should have when they're 35. It's so important. My physician will not take new patients over 50 that have not had this procedure. It's painless. On...

As much as I would like to be able, I don't speak in metric. I shoot for 0.15" give or take. :D Geez, Wayne, Google "inch to mm" and a conversion calculator shows right up. Then type in .150 and it shows 3.81 mm. :P Rad Waaaay too much work, Rad. You trying to give me carpal tunnel o...

Just gonna say conjecture, though I think it is a testable theory, I don't have the resources to test it scientifically. Didn't read this on the internet anywhere, I just thought a lot about what's happening to the smoke as it passes down the airway and the scientific principles that apply to conde...

Re: Clay Pipe Inspired Briar
Maybe round the shank side of the bowl a little more to echo the front side. Other than that the shaping is excellent, especially the shank and first part of the stem. :) Fishtail stems need to be much more gradual to give a more elegant look, rather than round, round round, round....... FLAIR! Rad

Re: Quality Vs. Quantity Debate
I was told by a certain member of this forum to start tossing stummels when I messed up on the basic shape instead of trying to fix the mistake on it. Moving to the next pipe instead of finishing once I had made a mistake took a lot of wasted briar, but it was well worth it in terms of the drastic ...
