Olive Wood
I have worked with Olive wood extensively and find it to be my second favorite wood next to briar. It drills, sands and carves wonderfully but can be brittle when carving against the grain so be carefull to go with the grain as much as possible. As with briar you want to orientate your design to get...

Acrylic Cumberland
Thanks guys for all the help. I checked all the online pen blank sites as well as Woodcraft and there are a few that come close. I think the best bet is what Kim suggested. The price is not bad at $25.74/1 meter rod plus shipping. I'll contact the customer and see what he wants to do. It's a good th...

Acrylic Cumberland
Thanks Rad and Todd. I did see the "Tiger" at PME and saw that they were out of it. Andrea is great to work with so I will be contacting her to see what kind of info I can get. Thanks again!

Acrylic Cumberland
Todd, I appreciate your generosity but since I almost exclusively work with acrylic and cast polyester for stems it would be great if I could find a steady and reliable source for what I'm looking for. I've looked for this material in the past and gave up after a couple of weeks of searching so now ...

Acrylic Cumberland
Hi guys, I've got a customer that has requested a four pipe set (various shapes) and would like the stems to be acrylic cumberland. Apparently he saw the stems on a number of pipes online and prefers acrylic to ebonite. Do you guys have any idea where I may be able to obtain acrylic cumberland rod? ...

Limited Budget
I think if there is one tool that I could not do without for pipemaking it would be a dremel or other rotary tool and a handfull of cutting bits. The cost is relatively low compared to other tools for pipemaking. I think you could probably get by for about $120 including a flex-shaft setup. You can ...
Logo Dots
Thanks guys for the input, you've talked me out of the idea. If there is one thing I don't need is another pain in the ass, got enough already. Seriously I knew you guys would come to my aid so thanks again I really appreciate it. I think I'll stick with a creative design for a stamp by A&M. Hop...
Logo Dots
Hey Frank, If you go to: http://www.pipephil.eu/logos/index-en.html and look under "Letters" and then "Name of Brand" and then scroll down to "Roverart" by Ardor you will see an example of an inlayed gold or brass dot with initials. Hope that helps. Like I said I don't ...
Logo Dots
Hi Guys, I'm hoping somebody may know the answer to this question. Where can I find logo dots or disks that can be customized with my initials? I'm looking to use them (inlayed) either on stems or possibly as an alternative to a stamp on the stummel. I'd like to use something very unique to my pipes...

Cast Polyester
I would have to "second" Kurt's comments on cast ployester resin. After an initial purchase of a pint with catalyst and color as a test mechanism I found it to behave quite like Ebonite except it's more britttle. Since I only have a wood turning midi-lathe to work with I've grown accustome...

Manzanita
Kurt, I couldn't agree more with what you said and 10 months does seem to be a short time in comparison to how long briar is dried. The blocks of manzanita were completely dry or I wouldn't even attempt to carve. The biggest problem was large gaps internally that were filled with sand and small rock...

Manzanita
Anvil, When the post about manzanita first appeared on this forum I immediately jumped on the bandwagon and began a 12 month journey that turned into a dead end for me. I've experimented with many different alternative woods for pipes, some good, some not so good. I've tried many different species o...

Stummel Ring
Thanks guys for the comments. Kurt had the answer I was looking for which is a technique that Cornelius Mainz (spelling?) appears to use on his pipes as well as others. In the past I used a delrin mortise along with an integral tenon made out of ebonite/vulcanite/acrylic. I showed these pipes to a r...

Stummel Ring
As always Kurt, thanks for the input. I'll try cutting some teeth into a brass tube and boring a circular channel on scrap briar first of course!

Stummel Rings???
I've got a question that has been rolling around in my head for awhile now and there's no better place to get the answer than here. I could have used this last night when I was fitting a delrin tenon into a stummel and cracked the stummel which was followed by some colorful language of course. I hap...

Tuskanite
Rad,
For those of us that can't attend the Richmond Show, will you be elaborating on the new found stem material: Tuskanite after the show?
Sounds very interesting but doesn't Google very well for more information.
Enjoy the Show!
Regards, Kevin

McMaster-Carr: Best Service Ever
I know that Kurt has made mention that he makes alot of purchases from McMaster-Carr but this one takes the cake. I was taking an inventory the other day of items that I was running low on and planned to replenish this week and Delrin Rod was one of them. For the last two days I checked a number of ...

Ebonite Friction Rod
The diameter is just under .500 inches. The quality may not be what a pipemaker is looking for as I was told the porosity of the vulcanite is not as dense as what we're used to in ebonite rod. I had thought about checking it out awhile back but the shipping for a couple of 12" rods bordered on ...
