Blender 3D is very powerful - and FREE. It's a bear to learn, the UI/hotkeys aren't so intuitive - but when you get the hang of it it's AWESOME!

Whenever I've looked for pre-fab churchwarden stems in the past I only found vulcanite ones - the ugly stems you mentioned Joe, were those acrylic? If so do you have a url to those?

Thanks for all the info here Sasquatch! - I've been using thinned down shellac (3 parts dna 1 part shellac), but have been wiping it off immediately. I'll try your advice of letting it dry then tripoli'ing it.

I have no room to offer any advice, being a noobie still. But on squaring the top by hand - I've had the best luck by filing/sanding applying pressure where my edge needs shortened, and changing the angle I'm filing often so I don't end up filing crooked along another axis. And I check the progress ...

The reason I ask is because it is very difficult to properly critique a pipe without at least both profile, top, and bottom pics.
