Re: Dressing a grinding wheel- ugh.

I like dressing my wheels in frilly pink clothes, or tight black leather when I'm feeling saucy.

Re: New pipe from a starving artist

I'm trying to think back what I did. I think I revoked his posting privileges, but allowed the account to remain. And apparently allowed PM privileges as well, if my inbox in any indication. I don't know why he was kicked off. I believe he's valued here as he keeps things interesting and thought pr...

Re: My first hand cut stem

Tom Eltang told me at my first Chicago Show: "Put each stem in your mouth. If it's not comfortable for you, it's not going to be comfortable for somebody else." Rad Another fantastic reason to buy a Rad Davis pipe! Ewww! Gross! Now I understand why my Rad smokes so sweet. It's got a...

Re: Applying Shellac

I dip my pipes in lacquer. I find the bowl coating the laquer provides is far superior to charcoal etc, and I get a nice even coat on the outside of the bowl. I believe Bo Nordh used the same technique, if I am not mistaken. I hope this helps make things unclear. Is that safe to smoke? Does the laq...

Re: Two rusticated

Hi Tommi- I wish the extension on the first pipe wasn't so long. It brings the back end of the pipe out of proportion. I think you couldv'e gotten away with it being half as wide, if not even thinner. I love your "sandblasting" work. The level of detail there is crazy....rusticating like t...

There's some places where being popular is definitely NOT something to be desired.

The main thing I have gleaned from this thread is that Rad enjoys pictures of people's "pipes."

Those Southern boys sure know how to have a good time...

I decided to leave the wound open and now stain all my pipes with my own blood. It makes them more collectible.

I figured if I wanted to be considered a legit carver, I needed scars or something, and I was too afraid to just cut off a fingertip in the bandsaw.

Am I legit now?

A sobering reminder

Note to all pipemakers, be they professionals or hobbyists. Powertools are dangerous, and caution should be used at all times. You never win in an argument with a drill bit.

I lucked out. It hurts, but it's not too bad, really.

Re: Cutty information

I'm certain Chris A. would agree with me. He makes a fine one. It's one of my signature shapes and I love making them. They smoke like a dream. This is a dirty lie. Chris Asswith make terrible cuttys. They look more like tugboats. Bruce Weeder makes cuttys, but they smoke like a bad dream. Like a d...

I get complaints like this all the time. Things like "your pipes have way to much perfect straight grain" and "your pipes are so comfortable and perfect that I can't stand it." I just try to do my best and replace such pipes with shitty Dr. Grabow's that I modify to smoke even wo...

If your buffing wheel is spinning, the wax is getting on there. You should be able to smell it...it has a very sweet aroma. You don't need very much.
