I did coat the pipe with shellac first, but I didn't get the shininess I was looking for. It is more of a satin finish, which is OK.

I wonder if I should have thinned down the Febings first. I used it straight.

Use a soft wax. I use renaissance wax for my textured pipes. Either that or use a shellac finish for shine although on oak that ain't gonna work. Chris, How do you use the Renaissance wax? Dry out used coffee well. You can throw it in the oven at low temperature for a while.

Then put it in a coffee grinder and grind it to a fine powder.

I can't comment on the best route if you are going to sand blast, but if you wanted to keep it smooth I would say the you have two options. Fill it with Briar dust and epoxy or make a feature out of it by filling it with Ebony dust (or coffee grounds is a surprisingly good substitute) and epoxy. Todd
