Re: International Shipping
It varies from country to country. There's usually a certain value over which the recipient will have to pay import fees. For example, when shipping to Switzerland, if the total value including shipping costs is over $55, then the recipient has to pay import fees. I guess it all depends on how much ...

Yep, strange - it was working earlier. I checked the site http://www.qualitybriar.com/pipes - his name was listed with the pipemakers on the left, but now it's gone.Zeeborn wrote:The link doesn't work. At least not for me.

Re: Tips for making oval shank
Thank you! Am I right in assuming that the tiny tenon is basically the shape of the oval. No, it's a circle within a circle. You're using the two circles to establish a symmetery around your centre point. The larger circle is your side-to-side diameter, the smaller (tenon) circle is your top-to-bot...

Re: Reformed Meerschaum?
Trying to read between the lines of their statement - what they seem to be saying is that instead of the usual "pressed meerschaum" made from meerschaum dust produced from carving/sanding, they've pressed small chunks together. I haven't carved the stuff from scratch, but working with it i...

Interesting variation on that particular shape. Nice use of the grain - flowing into the stem. I like the choice of stain colours - nice contrast.

Re: Controlled Substances - What Stinkin' Controlled Substances?
Ya know that Jamaican weed isn’t the only “controlled substance” you can put in your pipe. Even the legal stuff you smoked last night is getting more tightly controlled every day. It too will be available only on the black market in a few years. Ironically, Cannabis is actually becoming easier to l...

Controlled Substances - What Stinkin' Controlled Substances?
From "Stones" Thread Y'know, I've seen lots of these without stems used to smoke certain non-tobacco substances, to the extent where posessing one around here could result in being charged with possession of paraphernalia... Not usually made out of briar, I must admit. I can't...

An alternative to DIY is to send the wood to a business that specialises in stabilizing wood, etc. Shop around - cost and quality vary considerably.

Re: Popular Science Stem article
I've got a set of Popular Science "Home Handyman" books, there are a couple of articles on pipe making and repair. One of the great things about that time is how it's taken as given that everyone has a lathe. : ) Are you serious? They assumed that most "Home Handymen" owned a la...

How's This For A Crazy Smart Idea?
Scale this sucker down for pipemaking and you'd have a larger swing for stummels and a smaller swing for stems all-in-one machine: http://shopswarf.orconhosting.net.nz/mcl.html

Looks pretty good for a first pipe, but it's hard to see some of the detail against the black background. Perhaps a lighter background in future?

Re: Jewellers lathe?
As Jack said, the problem with hardening most steels is that they want to warp during quench - as you know. Yep, even as I was typing that I was thinking of the warpage factor, but hoped there might be a way around it, like case hardening. Wishful thinking on my part. BTW - I've seen hundreds...

Re: Jewellers lathe?
That's an interesting possibility, but the adapter ought to be hardened so that you can't machine it. Anything that holds the collet has to be hardened or you'll never get the collet out. Perhaps if I ask nicely enough (and throw in a bottle of olive oil  ) I could persuade Kurt to harden ...
