Re: Lathe help... The electrical kind.
I AM NOT AN ELECTRICIAN! Some motors have a wiring diagram on the inside of the electrical housing plate that should tell you all you need to know. In the absence of that, given that it's a single pole (110V), single phase motor, you only need to concern yourself with two leads - hot and neutral. It...

Nice! I'm definitely going to grab something larger one day, but that might involve inflating my workshop as well.

Re: Going to try bamboo.
No. You insert a drill rod blank into the airway, then press-fit/seat cut-to-length soft metal pins into the opposing holes, and stake all four ends into little mushrooms simultaneously with a single whack using a mallet & setting tool. Mechanical permanence in .001 seconds. :-D Fuckin fantasti...

Re: Toxic Materials
Aside from toxicity, Zebrawood is really soft and not uniform - akin to pine in my experience. That makes it less than ideal for anything but non-functional adornment. Frankly, all woods have some various degree of toxicity and carry some amount of resins and stuff, which is why briar is processed t...
Re: Shank Cap
Thanks for the reminder! I did capture at least one operation of this, an inset stem, in the video I took of making the PITH pipe. I'll be sure to put this on my list of videos to shoot sooner rather than later.

Terrible photos, but it's finished: http://www.pipemakersforum.com/images/IMG_8996.jpg http://www.pipemakersforum.com/images/IMG_8997.jpg Just need to stamp it and give a final buff. Thanks to Premal for setting this up and giving us all a chance to stretch our legs! I did play it a little safe with...

It might have been Trever Talbert, but I can't find it. As I recall, it was an exercise in the Golden Ratio.

As per usual, I never start anything until the last moment. Here's my contribution, fresh off the lathe. http://www.pipemakersforum.com/images/IMG_8982.jpg http://www.pipemakersforum.com/images/IMG_8983.jpg Stem next, then shaping. And I am managing to take video of the process - just so everyone ca...

Re: Hand plane...
Nice! I love old hand tools! I have a nice (growing) collection of Millers Falls planes from pre-WW2, and all of them are a dream to use. I sometimes buy the crappiest old tool I can find, just to have the joy of restoring it to usable condition.

That sucks!
I bolted down my South Bend 9c, but that was necessary due to the way the drive is setup. But, even if it wasn't necessary, I think I would anyway.

Re: Makis Vs Mimmo Ebauchon Heel Squareness
Get a set of tower jaws, or specialized pipe making jaws. They will have no trouble holding that block. If you're using standard #2 jaws on your lathe, they don't really have the reach to grip anything securely except your typical lathe work (what we do is not typical).

Well this is more of a Rudyard Kipling crowd, actually scratch that, this is maybe a Shel Silverstein crowd and quite likely Dr Seuss to be honest, but amongst the rabble there are a few educated cryptids. The Giving Tree will always be my favorite book. Where the Sidewalk Ends comes into the top t...

Re: Import Band Saws
Yes, Kurt, the spinning up by hand is part of it. I could (and probably should) buy another 9” benchtop saw. There have been times, though, when I would have liked to resaw a board. There are some pretty negative reviews of the HF 14”, but it seems some of those may be down to horrible assembly ins...

Re: Import Band Saws
I'm in the same boat with my 9" Delta. I have to spin it up by hand - it's a wonder I have any fingers left. I bought a Harbor Freight "portaband" saw several years ago for cutting steel, and it's still going strong. It cuts wood, just veeeeerrry slowly (but accurately). I'm also inte...
