Holy shit. I sure don't have a signature shape, but I think I've gotta try to come up with something.

Re: Any tips on selecting a tobacco?
Honestly, I wouldn't subdivide "mixtures with Latakia" into English/Scottish/Balkan at this point - there's some disagreement on the specifics of the differences between those (though "Scottish" usually just means "with some Cavendish", but then the question becomes &qu...

Re: NYH Cumberland
I put my findings on this thread here: http://pipemakersforum.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=35&t=10402&hilit=menzerna+compounds&start=60 I picked up the coarse and extra fine after reading that, and I can't believe how much easier they give good results than the garbage I'd been using from ...
Re: Acorn...
I like it! The bend amount looks about right to me. Downside I notice most is the slight turn down toward the end of the shank on the top line (which is something I do all the time so it sticks out to me). You're on a roll bud!

Tape ze sides! Tape ze sides! You know, I've done this ever since seeing you recommend it, and I'm yet to sand into an airway or get anything too thin. Such an easy step that makes such a difference. Rule of thumb David Huber gave me was to shoot for 6mm where it comes off the shoulder and 4mm at t...

Re: Polish virgin pipe
Non-streaky, you mean it's not going on in one perfectly smooth featureless coat? Put it on super thin with a rag, one pass. Let it dry, don't even look at it, it'll look like shit. Buff lightly with tripoli, now look at it. Basically polish it off, which is what you do with shellac anyhow. Right? ...

3mm chainsaw file was recommended to me at some point (by Jeremiah I think?), and it seems to work well for me so far.FJWyver wrote:Gauging the sharpness of the transition is tricky, and I think I agree that these are a little on the fuzzy side.

There's also a product called Wood Turner's Finish from General which is a water based urethane emulsion, and it makes hardly any color change at all on briar. So I definitely had picked a bottle of this up to play with, and I sure as shit couldn't get it non-streaky for the life of me. Any advice ...

Love it - and appreciate the handwritten notes for relative grits since their codes are incomprehensible . Thanks as always, George!

Re: Importance of Shellac ??
For the Menzerna, I believe George spills the beans on the exact ones he uses (for stems at least) in his videos, though I can't recall which ones (or which specific videos) - hopefully he'll chime in. Spending the money for good compound is an investment I still need to make, so I'm curious too.

Re: volcano with horn 9/30/18
There a strong intuitive tendency to cut/file/sand WITH a swoopy curve, because that's the desired direction of flow in the final result. Cutting ACROSS curves is how "life" is achieved, though. That sounds/feels weird, I know, but to try it is to understand it. I'm probably a dumbass, bu...

Re: Meerschaum joints...
That's great. I've all but given up on all my meers but one because of bad or failing stem/shank junctions. The one I still smoke is a special occasions only pipe that was a gift from my dad from his collection. Bummer too because I love how they smoke generally, I just tend to be a little hard on p...

Also an interesting factoid, the top three all have curved buttons. I thought this was interesting as well - I know I've seen you saying you'd adopted them at some point and preferred them. I've never owned/smoked a pipe with one, but I'm finally going to give it a shot on the one I'm working on no...

Any chance we could get the names in order? I think I know who did which for most of them but not all. When I saw that Yeti had feathered his blast at the end of the shank, I knew you'd be happy, George
