Re: looking for a tobacco...

I have never tried it so I cannot vouch for it's quality, but Sutliff's "Molto Dolce" advertises itself to be exactly the tobacco you describe.

Re: Blowfish carving

I'm no expert, but try using bits of course sand paper for cancave surfaces. Smaller pieces can be better at defining and following curves.

Re: Question for you toolsluts

For curiosity's sake, what would happen if someone were to grind the point off a Forstner bit, then try to drill it down the center to whatever size tenon you want? Would that work, or would there be problems with the bit wandering, or what?

Re: Petaluma CA

I may be there late July myself for a C school if all goes well. I seem to remember going to a decent tobacco store in the University Square Mall in Rohnert Park (amout 30 min. from base) when I was in A school about 8 years ago, but it may have just been a Tobacco Patch or similar chain store. What...

Or if you're super-cheap (like me) you can zip them in a coat pocket and throw it in the wash. Discovered that one by accident, works great.

Re: When you can't make one better than the last pipe.

I'm experiencing the same thing right now. For me, I think it's a two-parter. First, I've been trying to stretch myself and take some risks, which is bound to bound to be met with some initial failures. Second, what Walt said: Congratulations! You are becoming more discerning, and less accepting of ...

Re: Stem bending methods

Come to think of it, is there any reason I shouldn't be doing this? Steam changing the dimensions of the mortise or something?

Re: Stem bending methods

I've been using steam from a tea kettle. Steam is much hotter than boiling water, but it still doesn't scorch or leave junk on the ebonite.

Re: Who wants an order for 5-10 pipes?

Hang around. You'll see a lot weirder shit than that. Somehow, I don't think so. I think Ratimus should go after this order though. Rad Note to self: 1. Acquire cheap ebauchons. 2. Drill some holes in them. 3. Print out 1.5" x 1.5" pictures of George Whitworth. 4. Paste pictur...

Re: Who wants an order for 5-10 pipes?

This is my first post on here. I'm a 30-something student who returned to school after spending some time in the workforce, and I ended up at Whitworth. Just started making pipes this year. Seriously did not expect to open up a post on this forum and see a picture of good ol' George Whitworth starin...
