Thanks for the advice and the blends you've mentioned. If you were to put together a "beginner" set for someone with one tobacco from each blend, what would you choose?
English, Balkan, Scottish, Virginia, Va/Per, Aromatic, Burley, Oriental

What's a good strategy for narrowing down which tobacco blends/family suit my pallet? Are there questions I can ask myself to eliminate options? There are so many choices out there. Picked up an estate pipe. Full bent and the previous owner apparently liked to let it hang which caused the shank side chamber wall to burn and loose material. Over-reaming also left gouges in the walls. No burnouts evident. I don't smoke this pipe very often but would like to prevent further damage...

I'd be proud to have that in my collection. Nitpicking: a little more bend in the stem so that it's slightly more parallel with the rim.

Back on track: I mixed one part Zinsser Bullseye shellac (non-spray can) with 1.5 parts de-natured alcohol in my baby food jar. I then spread said mixture on some sample briar pieces with a pipe cleaner. Some stain came off but not so much to affect the look or even notice really. I buffed the piece...
