could you please tell me how you sharpen a spade bit while it is turning in the lathe,I use a scraping chisel and bore chambers by hand, which is fine but recently I've thought of using a spadebit, but was also aware of both sides being uneven when sharpened by hand
thanks

pooka I agree with you,for me perfectionism has been more of a problem throughout my life, the reason; nothing in life is perfect, however I did not realise this till I was around 40 years old,now life is much easier---phew! I have worked at various crafts and found the most critical are fellow crafts...

good luck with your pipemaking, with all the talk of perfection in making pipes you are well on your way.The other day I picked up an expensive pipe by a well known maker and had a closer look, stem hole not central ,draw hole also , hole not coming in at exact bottom of bowl ,and finish less than per...

talking the other day to a friend well versed in the computer world(I'm a technophobe- I guess I just don't have the interest for it) he stated that merely building a website is not enough to establish any business, connections to a bigger body is more effecient ,how do other makers view the web as a...

hallo
I know most of the pros and cons of shellacing pipes, but does anyone know of an 'acceptable' way of doing it?how many coats are required and is the shellac left as applied or is it buffed/polished in any way
thanks

turning delrin
hallo folks
I would like any advice on the turning qualities of delrin, is it similiar to vulcanite?I agree with the recent talk of stems becoming loose etc, delrin is surely a step in the right direction, for me at least

Sharpening chisels to a newcomer in woodturning is a cause of much frustration,It took me a long time to sharpen tools consistantly well. I have read of aspiring turners to give up because they were unable to do it well, nowadays there are jigs as mentioned that help a great deal.in the book mentione...

random,I have seen discs that are steel with a rough surface, they resemble a rubber backing pad in shape, they appear lethal as far as taking skin off knuckles,I have considered them but I'd prefer the failings of rubber discs from a safety point of view.I have tried to source them but I cannot find ...

drying
If it was me,I would put the briar in paper bags ,as it allows the briar to breathe and will slow down any drying that takes place thus avoiding cracks, also try to keep the briar in as cool a temperature as you can.If the briar is quite fresh or green as we say in the uk put some shavings or absoran...
