WTB - Devil Anse

I have a co-worker who is getting back into pipes. He has mentioned several times how he can't find a Devil Anse style nose warmer. I have looked too with no luck. I told him I would mention the details of what he is looking for here and see if anyone bites. From what I gather he would like a dark s...

Actually, it closely resembles the profile of the calabash in your avatar. Guess he didn't see that before sketching?

Re: Calling all really talented, smart people...

I guess some sort of bamboo shanked sitter is out of the question? The sketch looks like some kind of opium pipe or something, but the design could be made functional and still work well for baccy. Good luck and can't wait to see what transpires.

Re: Blasted Dublin (riff on Rad's shape)

The more I look the more I love the finish. You need to make a name for yourself and your style of finish. I offer you the "Beef Jerky" line of Uber's. That pipe makes me want to smoke!

Won't stand you say? Scratches in the stem? I'll give you $50 for it to help cut your losses. :) Just kidding. That is an excellent looking pipe! But the offer stands...

Re: Hardware overload.

Depends on how frugal you plan of being. Pretty easy to find a 1.5-2hp treadmill that is toasted and salvage the motor and possibly the speed control. Someone on Craigslist might literally pay you to haul away their old treadmill.

Re: Jet vs Grizzly?

My company gets a lot of our wood working tools from Grizzly, but most people here seem to talk about the Jet metal lathes. The Grizzly metal lathes are much cheaper, are they just not good enough? rev How have the other Grizzly tools help up and how do they compare to other brands your company use...

Re: Nordic Track 120" Belt Sander

The speed control on the treadmill was shot, but the more I research the motor the happier I am. Seems to be the perfect project motor for many uses. I also brought home a Montgomery Ward 14" wood lathe today for $50 that does have a speed control. The motor works in the Ward lathe but an upgra...

Re: Nordic Track 120" Belt Sander

It's funny. The more I research slack sanders the more I think I should just scrap this project. I think I would get better results by bolting the motor to the ground, using pulleys to reach the best speed and just having an on/off switch. Mount a tension wheel to the wall, order up a couple rolls o...

Even if the wood turns out to not be suitable as pipe material I say give it a try. If it turns out nice add a bowl insert if needed. Good luck and have fun.

Re: Nordic Track 120" Belt Sander

Made some progress after work. Removed the running bed frame, spun it around 180 degrees and bolted it to the cross-member on the upper part of the frame. Everything is sturdy and not going anywhere. Also hung the other roller at the top. It can be adjusted on either side for tension but will probab...

Re: Nordic Track 120" Belt Sander

Wow. Glad that got cleared up. I would have done the exact opposite. Terminology makes sense though, crowned. Would a 2" belt be the width most desirable to use? I would think no wider but possibly down to 1", I don't know. Will probably go with a 180 and a 320 grit to start. Maybe 120, 22...

Found something very similar to what I had in mind over at pipedia. Strange but it looks to me like the pulleys are slightly convex instead of concave?

Re: Nordic Track 120" Belt Sander

Interesting project. Don't forget that somehow the pulleys will have to have a slight crown or the belt(s) will try to run all over the place. Chas. I was hoping to get away with just a groove in the top pulleys. To be safe and avoid having to go back and modify later I will groove out the bottom r...
