Yes, always! If necessary, you can always go in with a boring bar and adjust the chamber that way.

Re: My first Straight Billiard

A very nice pipe, and while I would not quibble with calling it a "billiard," I think it could benefit from more taper (as it moves upward), a larger radius at the front of the bowl, and a couple of degrees of forward cant on the top if you're shooting for a more "archetypal" bil...

Re: Perfectly Flat and Parallel Acrylic Rings

This is really innovative, and while you're going the "long way around," this is what I spoke of when I mentioned "working your way up" with respect to tooling. If you can figure out how to do something like this with what you have, you will be ahead of the curve when you get the...

Re: Drawing Templates

I've never used a pipe template. My good friend Jody, however, has never made a pipe without a template, I don't think. It depends a great deal on how you work. If you're just starting out, I think using templates is probably a good idea. When you encounter flaws, don't chase them. Make the pipe tha...

Re: Pipe "Alchemy"

These words have new meaning for me after experiencing the "Stinky Ebonite" thread. My ebonite smells like flowers and sleeping puppies. I assumed that was normal. Which varietal is it, a Burgundy, or a Pinot? I find that ebodust from the Champagne region smells the sweetest, but it's cel...

Sometimes, it's nice to see PURE CRAZY spill out in front of you, if only to help you realize you're less CRAZY than some. In this way, Mike has served a purpose in the lives of others. In another way, he's made us all dumber. That said, I wish Mike "Crazy Town" Messer all the best in sell...

Re: Pipe "Alchemy"

Todd, I have to say your original post is right on. I'm a newbie. I wouldn't even regard myself as a pipe maker yet. I have shaped a total of four predrilled blocks with prefabricated stems. After watching a ton of youtube I did what a lot of newbies do. I thought my pipes were amazing and I plaste...

I believe what you're looking for is the "stinky ebonite thread." It should provide you with all the information you could possibly want, and then some.

Re: How...

Jonathan, I've had great experiences with Precision Matthews. This is an imported lathe that's made in a factory with German engineers and engineering standards. You can get the same lathe, branded as a Knuth for several thousand dollars more. I have owned two 12x36's and an 1127VF. All of them are ...

Is there a specific kind of respirator you need? I imagine my ten year old not-so-amazing one wouldn't work. You can just get a standard 3M cartridge style painter's respirator. It will filter out even the smallest airborne particles, and the filter pads are inexpensive. The charcoal cartridges tha...

Re: How...

I think what is meant by "outgrow" is simply that you may find the lathe won't actually do everything you need to do somewhere down the road. Fir instance, if you're trying to turn the dome for a calabash, the jaws will not open wide enough to hold the material. You can spin the jaws aroun...

Re: Sandblaster/ compressor help

You'll definitely need a good dust extractor for the cabinet and clean its filters often. When the glass beads break down they will turn to a very fine flour. Chas. Just gonna repeat this. I suck all the air out of my blasting cabinet all the time with a hepa-type filtered vacuum. This is dust that...

Re: I bought a lathe :) would like some help with tools now :)

There's a photo of my cutting tools on here somewhere, but I just wanted to say this. Even if you're using german tool steel--which I am--you will need to sharpen your cutting tools for about every two or three stems. Don't spend a bunch of money on pre-profiled cutting tools because they're good fo...

Re: Sandblaster/ compressor help

For the record, if you're using a siphon feed blasting setup, the air requirements are much higher than if you're working with a pressure pot. You'll pay a couple thousand dollars+ for a pressure pot rig, but you can go with a comparatively small compressor--5 hp., 60 gal, single stage, single phase...
