Re: Shaping & shining the crease behind the button (VIDEO)
After answering a few PM's, I guess I should clarify my response to these videos. These questions are specifically for LatakiaLover, I suppose. 1. If you sand to 1800 grit, what grit are you polishing with? From the looks of it, that's Tan compound followed by Red. The brand looks like Diamond to me...

Re: "We've got a Piper down!!!"
Bypass the integral switch and use some Romex to hardwire it. You can use a standard light switch in an electrical box in between. Any marginally competent electrician should be able to do this for about $50. Once you have some breathing room, diagnose the problem and fix it with factory replacement...

Wowsers! That was . . . unorthodox.

Will one of you guys that wants a set put together a separate "official" thread for sign-ups? Once we get to ten I'll have them made.

Re: Outside dust collection in the Northern(ish) hemisphere?
I might just go with that solution TJ. I have a friend who repairs guitars and he's done the same thing with boxing up the collector. Of course, mine looks like this, not exactly designed to be easily boxed: http://www.cpodeltamachinery.com/delta-50-760-1-1-2-hp-single-phase-dust-collector-1200-cfm...

Re: Outside dust collection in the Northern(ish) hemisphere?
At The Briar Studio, we keep our dust collectors in an MDF box lined with pink fiberglass insulation. This serves two purposes; first, it reduces the noise to the point that you can carry on a conversation at a normal volume level while the dust collector is running, and second, it keeps the fine du...

Re: TMJ Pipemaker Tooling
Well, it did happen . . . 20 times in one week without pictures. Maybe one of you who bought them would like to post a photo. TJ P.S. I am going to start a list for those who weren't able to get in on the first round, for whatever reason, but would like a set. Once we get to 10, I will do another run.

Re: Small Business Taxes...HOLY SHI...COW!
When you're taxed as a small business--LLC or sole proprietorship, you're taxed on your net income, not your gross income. If your CPA is too retarded to get your net income down to zero after deductions--especially on such a small amount--then you should just get TurboTax and do it yourself. The ta...

Re: TMJ Pipemaker Tooling
Guys, one set left for those who will not be in Chicago. For those who will, I arrive Wednesday, and I will sell five sets before the show, but I want to keep at least five sets on the table.

Re: Ordered my "dream lathe" EDIT: photos added
Tyler, Just talked with Matt at Quality Machine Tools, and he is just waiting on a parts list from you to replace anything that's been damaged in shipping. This is right in line with the level of service I've come to expect from these guys. Again, I don't necessarily disagree with all the "don'...

Re: Ordered my "dream lathe"
It's not $3K versus $8K, that was $8K MORE. So $3K versus $11K. Actually, that's a conservative estimate. For example, South Bend, which is actually a Taiwanese lathe, doesn't make a 12, but their 13" is $15K. An additional $3K makes the argument stronger, to be sure. The Taiwanese gear is act...

Re: TMJ Pipemaker Tooling
Down to five sets via e-mail. TJ Whether or not they will "technically" work, I'm going to say no, just because I think it's a bad idea to do this sort of work with such a tiny lathe. Your money would be better spend upgrading you lathe. If my goal were just to sell tooling, I could proba...

Re: TMJ Pipemaker Tooling
Okay folks, the spoon bit sets will each include one 18, 19, 20, and 21 mm. bit with primary and secondary relief so they have only three points of contact. This allows them to clear chips while still self tracking. They are profiled in such a way that they are suitable for drilling 90% of all shape...

Sounds really interesting. Could somebody post a couple photos. I've done calabashes using rare-earth magnets several times, and would love to check it out. Problem is, I'm in Shanghai--no Facebook.

Re: TMJ Pipemaker Tooling
Because different lathes have different spindle sizes, and it's a pain to change out chucks anyway, the chuck will mount in your existing 3-jaw. Also, the spoon bits will not be available for purchase in individual sizes.

TMJ Pipemaker Tooling
Hey Guys, Just wanted to give everyone an update. Spoon bit sets are currently in production--17, 18, 19, and 20mm in the exact same profile. I am also producing a two-jaw chuck in two sizes--one for those with larger lathes, and one for those with the 9x20 variety. All are guaranteed to work. I wil...

Re: Shape first, drill later...
Guys, I'll be out of the country for a month, and during this time, I hope to make real progress on the tooling. I will pop in from time to time and give a progress report. I hope to have more than just spoon bits in Chicago, and then thereafter in perpetuity.

Re: Shape first, drill later...
Todd, I still don't understand the part about Brad's bits. I have a set. I'm not a 600lb gorilla, yet I managed to drill a couple of pipes (and screw another pair.) However, it wasn't comfortable nor smooth, so I'm very interested: what are you saying? Cheers, Leo Leo, I've used Brads bits, and onc...
