That wood is a stabilized clear buckeye burl.

Had to make something

I'm currently out of briar so I had to make something. Here are a couple of things I've been up to. https://33.media.tumblr.com/9f5d36ad5bb54d9bcb3bfbbdb265b449/tumblr_nfrk63aNtH1u4e5jno3_1280.png https://33.media.tumblr.com/d1a9b127509ca5af65b7a356a1faeaad/tumblr_nfrk63aNtH1u4e5jno1_1280.png https:...

Re: woodcraft briar

I did a little more research and found that www.cormarkint.com is their distributer. I understand that it is expensive. I just thought it was interesting that woodcraft found that it was going to be profitable for them to carry briar. Evidently they have been getting enough request to carry the stuff.

Re: Wood lathe and stem making

wow. Lots of great information. I just purchased the a Easy Start Rougher 3/8" Carbide Woodturning Tool and a set of pen jaws from woodcraft. I'm going to practice on a bunch of acrylic that I don't really care about first. I'm very interested in using the wrench tool method as well. Thanks so ...

Re: Wood lathe and stem making

so instead of purchasing the tendon tool I should maybe get the spigot jaws and a Easy Start Rougher 3/8" Carbide Woodturning Tool. Thoughts? I believe it is the same sort of cutting tool.

Wood lathe and stem making

I have been using a forstner bit and delrin on my pipe stems. I haven't had the best luck due to the fact that the stem material was only being held on two sides using the inside of two tower jaws. Getting a flush fit has been impossible. There always seems to be light shining through the joint. My ...

pipe #4 first billiard

Hey guys, I just completed my first billiard. I listened to one of Olies podcast with Todd Johnson the other day. Todd encouraged new pipe makers to not be afraid and get there pipes out there. The first 3 pipes are aweful. You will not be seeing those. I got lucky when making pipes 4 and 5. Tyler B...

Re: Pipe "Alchemy"

Todd, I have to say your original post is right on. I'm a newbie. I wouldn't even regard myself as a pipe maker yet. I have shaped a total of four predrilled blocks with prefabricated stems. After watching a ton of youtube I did what a lot of newbies do. I thought my pipes were amazing and I plaster...

Cool. Thanks so much guys for your input. I didnt know how much emphasis I needed to put on my drawings vs just letting the briar decide whats going to happen. Thanks guys.

Drawing Templates

Hey everyone. I'm very new to the pipe making scene. In fact i've only shaped three hobby pre drilled kits. And you could tell Im new. my question is this. Do you guys dedicate any time to drawing pipe shapes? Does drawing pipes help you in your pipe shaping and coming up with new shapes and modific...

Re: Pipe reaming tool

I have only restored about 50-60 pipes over the past year. I have tried a number of bowl reamers and have been frustrated with most devices. This device has saved me so much time and is much easier to use. I also have made a lot fewer mistakes when reaming bowls with this device. Here is a like to t...
