ok, so to make sure I understand. in the example " 3/4" x 16 TPI " the "3/4" should be the spindle diameter and the "16 TPI" is the thread count? I am guessing that "TPI" is threads per inch.

Very interesting. according to that the heart of some of the old sapote trees are dark, that must be what I have. One corner of the block was lighter but mostly its kinda dark. I'll play with it and post pitures in a week or two.
