Pipe #3

This is a $2 Eubachon and a Pimo stem. The drilling is slightly off. Actually the bowl is a bit off from the stem itself - chalk that up to not double checking my line on the drill press before I cut. But I finished up anyway and unless you squint, you don't really notice. For less than $8 in raw ma...

Blackwood Pipe.

I just bought one of these from South Africa and received it in the mail today. It's a billiard / stack with a cumberland bit and damn if it ain't beautiful. I also play the Great Highland Bagpipes, and this is the same wood that they are made out of. I'll give it a try and let you guys know what it...

Well, Nevermind - My personal email to pipes.org forum member John Wade Long prompted this reply: http://forum.pipes.org/~discus/discus/messages/25/74302.html?1213466928 ... Re: the asbestos bowl in calabashes. Those are obvious, are marked as "asbestos", and are never white or gray, but a...

Meerschaum / Gypsum / Asbestos ?

Hi Gents. Is there any way to determine the material of a calabash pipe bowl? I bought this 'Meerschaum Calabash" (ebay) with the intention of cleaning and using it. I would assume it is edwardian era (Though don't know if it's provable from the faded maker's mark and lack of hallmarks.) I'm su...

Ray, I regularly smoke twist tobacco, which you cut into coins just like what you are describing. There are a couple of FAQ's out there, but the general consensus is simply to experiment and find out what works best for you. I usually stack the coins into the pipe and then rub one coin out and pack ...

Thanks for the comments. I agree that the walls could be thicker - I'm working with pretty small blocks of briar - I'll have to leave the 1" spade bit aside for some bigger blocks. This actually works out nice for me though - It'll be a great shop pipe because it will hold a fairly large charge...

Pipe Number 2

Hello All, I'd like to present pipe#2 for your criticism. A few Notes: 1. Currently I have a Drill Press, Band Saw and Disc/belt sander in my shop 2. This Pipe was made from a $2 Ebauchon and a $2.50 Pimo stem. 3. This pipe is NOT FINISHED (i.e. not fully sanded) I am trying to play with the mechani...

95% ethanol is available in Italy in any grocery store, because many Italians still make homemade liquors with it (Soak lemons in pure ethanol for 40 days, then strain, Dilute with water and sugar to taste, and BAM you get Limoncello) Anyway, from what I understand, the purer the alcohol, the better...

My first pipe was made with a reused stem that came in a box of estates that I had purchased. This stem was odd - It wasn't vulcanite or acrylic. It was still black - no discoloration at all, even though it was probably 20 years old. It smelled like vanilla (It had picked up the scent of the tobacco...

Wood Stummel / Alternate tobacco chamber

Hiya Folks, I absolutely LOVE clays. That being said, they are a real pain in the rear when it comes to travelling. I Don't like meerschaum as much - there's something about the flavor that puts me off. My question is this. How does one affix a meerschaum bowl into a normal tobacco chamber? I would ...

Great stuff! I live in Italy and these guys throw out olivewood every year when they prune the trees. I'm trying to find some decent enough for pipemaking, but it hasn't happened yet. Let us know how it goes w/ making a pipe - would love to hear about it!

You can still find this in pouches in Italy - matter of fact, even the lower-end stores carry it. Though it's a new blender and I'm told it's not as good as the older blend. I like it though!

Greetings from Italy

Hiya folks, My name's Matt, and I'm currently working for the US Navy in Italy. I've been here about 3 years and have really started to become interested in making my own pipes. Those of you on ASP know me as "Matteo in Italy." I'm a certified Motorcycle technician (Hence my Nickname for t...
