I recantly retired and took this up as a way to relax. I suspect I may never make a pipe I consider good enough to sell. That is ok I really enjoy the process. I have never done any sort of wood working and am surprised at how enjoyable it is.

So if you decide to cut off the shank and use a shank extension how do you get the two surfaces to match perfectly? How do you now face it off square?

Cracked Shank

Working on no.5 ran into a cracked shank at the mortise. Shaping almost done. Anyway to fix it or should I just write it off as a lost cause?

Setting the Stain

How do you get the stain to set on the pipe. I noticed that when smoking a pipe for the first few times stain is coming off on my hands. Not a good thing I would think. So I know my staining method lacks some thing? Any suggestions? I am using Fiebings Leather dye.

Can I find a source for pre formed stems? I just started and do not have the equipment to make stems as of yet. There is the problem I managed to break off the tenon on the stem of a pipe I was making from a pre bored block. the pipe is shaping up nicely. Need to buy another stem with out buying in ...
