Re: Airway Drilling Help

I drilled my first several pipes on a drill press, and essentially built a jig out of 2x4s that mimics a pipe making chuck on the lathe - pins on the sides that allow you to clamp the block to the table, clamp the block, and then rotate it around only the axis that changes for the airway/chamber. Do...

Re: a matter of taste... but what is that?

My dude there is a date stamp on these threads... and this one's super excited about getting its driver's license next week. Thank you. So just for clarification: Instead of reviving an old thread, I should - if I am interested in further comments to what has been said years ago - start a new...

Re: The first two true Tomatoes.

will continue my thought ... Here is another example https://a.radikal.ru/a27/2006/71/fa412d1034d4.jpg How elegant this smoking pipe looks, although the stem here is very far from 6 mm. True - but it's also a much longer stem so it still looks thin and elegant. My reasoning is that I clench, and I ...

Re: The first two true Tomatoes.

I agree with Wayne on pretty much all counts - shaping on the bowls is very aesthetically pleasing to my eye - the shanks don't match yet but are getting better for sure. As a general rule (and grain of salt here) I'll typically aim for about 6mm for the stem as it transitions to the flare, assuming...

Re: Billiard for your Critique

Biggest thing that jumps out at me beyond the above comments is the rim angle - what angle are the chamber/airway to each other? Is the rim perpendicular to the chamber? A big part of a billiard looking right (to me) is that ~93 degree angle so the bowl tilts ever so slightly away from the smoker - ...

I loved it for so long but at some point it became a cold-weather only tobacco for me, whereas DFK is a tobacco for all seasons.

Re: I now understand why you guys tell us to try and master the Billiard

Funny thing is I've seen a bunch of collectors swing the same way, having gone from the biggest, fanciest best-grained wonder-fish thing to just having a whole roll-up case full of billiards because . I had collector tell me in no uncertain terms that he thinks most collectors eventually find a cla...

Re: I now understand why you guys tell us to try and master the Billiard

I understand the reason, I just wish it wasn't such a frustratingly hard endeavor. For suck a classic, basic shape its been the most difficult to make... Precisely. Nowhere for weak spots to hide, really - but everything you learn from holding lines, making curves look good, etc., ALL applies to an...

Re: I now understand why you guys tell us to try and master the Billiard

I'm a clencher....or what is the word...lunt?.....so in addition to trying to get the form and function right I want to try to make as light a billiard as I can too. My two most smoked pipes at this point are two billiards I've done. Even if it's not as pretty, I like a short saddle stem specifical...

Re: I now understand why you guys tell us to try and master the Billiard

After I posted my first non-kit pipe on here, folks told me to clear whatever else I was planning and to make some billiards, and they couldn't have been more right. I think I've done 11 or 12 at this point and still don't think I've really gotten one right - and I've made ~30 other pipes in that ti...

Here is the finished set up. It is sitting on a broad concrete shelf in my basement. The lathe is not bolted down but it does not vibrate or move. It weighs 150 pounds. Mine doesn't either, until I've got stummel swinging around in there  The only other modification I'm going to make is to pai...

Re: Can Anyone Tell Me Where To Purchase Honey Colored Dye?

FWIW I basically never actually mix stains with one minor exception (I've got some yellow and a touch of red in my shellac, usually). Everything gets layered on full strength - I'd probably do buckskin @600 and probably 800, followed by yellow at 1000 if I were doing a smooth. Probably a coat of yel...

Re: Can Anyone Tell Me Where To Purchase Honey Colored Dye?

Some combination of Fiebing's buckskin and yellow would probably work pretty well, though some briar is naturally redder. Sometimes that straight yellow by itself gets a little greenish but I bet there's enough brown/orange in the buckskin to warm it up some.
