Re: Smooth bent apple - honest feedback requested

I know you were - but these days my brain is like a sieve and I just assume everyone else with kids is similarly affected :D
I have no idea why "shine like mad" became my favorite George-ism, but it really stuck with me

Re: Replacement stem making A to Z (instructional video set

Very cool, thank you. If nothing else, maybe they'll do cool things for the rustication I've been doing occasionally - I could see the bristles tracking into the grooves and possibly adding some interesting texture.

Re: Smooth bent apple - honest feedback requested

I personally try to make the side of the stem (at the button) be as wide as the slot. This isn't a very good pic of that, but you can see the sides are well defined. Damn, that's something I never considered - I've just been eyeballing mine and then looking at the Abe/Davidson examples mine look to...

Re: Smooth bent apple - honest feedback requested

Sounds good bud - I tried to really look at the pictures closely because I thought it could be the light but I wasn't sure. How thick is it at the end by the shoulder? My rule of thumb (given to me by a pipemaker who actually knows what he's doing) was to shoot for 6mm at the end of the radius and t...

Re: Replacement stem making A to Z (instructional video set

Okay so I'm going to bump this with a couple of questions: 1. Are these the discs I'm looking for: https://www.amazon.com/3M-RADIAL-BRISTLE-BRUSH-ASSORTMENT/dp/B00VZ3DW2E/ ? 2. As much as I want to get a proper sandblasting set up, the cost/space required makes it unfeasible at the present time - co...

Re: Smooth bent apple - honest feedback requested

So - some of the pictures are gone/mangled, but I'd highly recommend reading and following the picture guidelines: http://www.pipemakersforum.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=18&t=8876 Makes all this shit easier IMO. Standard "I'm a scrub and a newb so take this with a grain of salt" disclaim...

Also the passenger side of the bowl might hang just slightly lower than the driver side.

Re: prince #4

Caveat being that I don't know the prince and haven't carved any, but that's looking pretty sharp to me. Slight bit of wobble/off angle at the top of the shank, but that might be you preparing for the bend in the stem. Likewise on the bottom view it looks like there's a bulge in the shank just after...

Re: Video project #3 just added - Rebuilding an ornamental s

This was really great George - just finished up watching this morning. As a dumbass impressionable newbie, I definitely have been guilty of exactly what happened here - not that I expect any of the pipes I'm making at this point to get smoked and loved for 50 years, but it's definitely something I'l...

I'm not joking when I say this is George's cell phone and it literally has 2 phone numbers saved in it. Any type of phone originating social media is a no-go for our not-so-friendly neighborhood codger. :thplt: Holy shit that's amazing. I really think we need to get you set up Lee Von Erk Style wit...

Re: Billiard - Appreciate any feedback

So here are my thoughts: - chin too big a radius as you mentioned - maybe too sharp a taper in the shank when viewed from above/below - you could cut that line on the back of the bowl just slightly more vertical where it meets the shank - I can't tell if the angle is drilled at 90 degrees and the ri...

Re: Help Me Decide My PITH 2018 Entry - #29 & #30

There should be a guarantee that the next one is better..... use what you've learned from these two, be deliberate and thoughtful, and the next will show it. Should be, absolutely. I just know that I'm still at a point where I really struggle with consistency - even when I am trying to be deliberat...

Ha, neither have I! I'm just not sure I'll have the time to get another one done in time, and even if I did, there's no guarantee it'd end up better than either of these.

Re: Help Me Decide My PITH 2018 Entry - #29 & #30

I appreciate it, Doc. What's interesting is that your eye seems to match mine in this case - in the various places I've posted, most people are tending to favor #30 - the better flow from the side and better grain outweigh the shortcomings for them. For me, the flaws in #30 are much more damning.

Re: Help Me Decide My PITH 2018 Entry - #29 & #30

Thanks Jeremy. I've literally got one of those on my amazon shopping list right now. #29 is fairly close (the picture's a bit off but I'd checked another one by mirroring it in PhotoShop). #30 is way off but it doesn't seem as noticeable in person, at least to me. I think had I gotten that shank fig...

Help Me Decide My PITH 2018 Entry - #29 & #30

One two... authors kneel before you (not looking like I'll be doing a prince for the carving contest but I couldn't resist). https://s9.postimg.cc/ry7yhr7pr/image.jpg All right so I'd made two of these with the hope that I'd get one right enough for PITH, and unfortunately I did a few things better ...
