Re: Wiggly stems....

I have had this same issue Scottie. It is in fact climate change and "green" briar. I started doing what Sas does since last spring because of this problem. Another option available but not necessarily favorable to collectors is a delrin sleeve which will stabilize the fit and finish. This...

Re: First Morta - Billiard

Looks good Walt! I have only seen a couple of morta pipes with smooth finish that we're amazing and they were done by Daniel @ Nd pipes. There was one in particular that comes to mind that was so smooth and it looked like a carbon fiber patern. My understanding is that it is very difficult to obtain...

It's driving me absolutely crazy that I can't be there with you all :/ I love being with my kids and wife, but I'm with them everyday, and this is such a great opportunity I'm missing out on. Have fun all, and post lots of pictures!

Re: 2014 Pipe In The Hat Trade.

Damn fine job Chas! That pipe is very sharp and classy. I think it represents the straight stem perfectly. It would not look right being bent, and I would say because it's army mount. If it were a seamless transition, then maybe a slight Bend would lend merit to the design. Man that's nice!

Re: Buffing hard to reach places...

I use an old bow saw with cotton and flannel strips. I just recently came up with this but it works well because you can maneuver it around the curves of the bowl and shank and easily clean up any overlapped build up.

Hi Jeff, just wanted to say thank you for sharing the videos with everyone. I suspected the procedure for the military bit was as you demonstrated. I like to be 100% with everything I do and you came through for those of us that were unsure or just didn't have a clue. I really enjoy using your tooli...

Re: J Alan Design Tools

Thanks Premal, I was just wondering so I know what degree to cut my tenons. The J.Alan bits are very nice! I'm about to put them to use here in a bit. I prefer a bit more taper on the chamber bits, but I picked up a 7/8 for making large chamber straights. Really wish I could make it to the meet up ...

Re: J Alan Design Tools

I have a quick question concerning the military kit. The brass tubing that is supplied with the kit, I noticed in the pic has teeth cut into it for obviously making the brass sleeve that would be set into the shank. How deep should you set that brass ring/sleeve? Is 3/8 the correct depth or should i...

Re: 2014 Pipe In The Hat Trade.

Damn Harry, you nailed it! I like that a lot. The only thing that I may have done differently (and this is JMO) is from the top view the stem looks pinched to obtain the fish tail. I would have left those sides more parallel or smoothed the lines a little more. But that sir is the best I've seen so ...

Wow, thanks for your time to break it down for me. I will definitely try bringing it down to 1200 with the 8" and I also have a bunch of 5" buffs that I started with.

Re: Variable Speed Sanding/Buffing Option

I'm actually using it when I do my buffing and polishing. I have a 3600 rpm grinder and I'll slow it down to about 2000 rpm and use an 8 inch buffing wheel which I believe will have a slower surface speed compared to the 6 or smaller size buffs. It seems to be working well.

Re: Variable Speed Sanding/Buffing Option

I just recently purchased a variable speed foot pedal and it seems to be working just fine on my 1/2 hp 6" bench grinder. It cost me $27.95 plus $6.00 shipping. My only question now is, can this cause harm to the motor?

I'm still in, just waiting for it to warm above freezing so I can work comfortably in my shop. Hoping to get some shop time this weekend. I also need to get a new bandsaw as the old aluminum cast guide mount have started crumbling :/

Re: 9" South Bend Lathe for Sale

These lathes are perfect for pipe makers. They're just the right size IMO. I have a model A just like it but it has the quick change gears for cutting threads. It's belt driven which is great for the noob is machinist because if you mess up and try to hog to much material or get your are caught in i...
