Real name: David Keean Age: 49 Location: Wildwood, CA Years a pipe smoker: 30+ How you got into pipe making: Restoration work and poor man pipe collecting. Re: Bought a Jet 1014

Congrats, Jet makes a nice mini-lathe. I got the same one sitting here and it worked well for a spell, at some point the pull of the Jet 9X20 took me over (the cross slide and all that). Now though you are gonna need the chuck, the adaptor to make the chuck fit on the lathe, and proper jaws to hold...

Bought a Jet 1014

Thanks to PMF I made an educated purchase and am happy with my first baby-step towards being a grown-up pipe-maker someday. So far I've done everything with a drill-press, a benchtop sander, and a sanding wheel. Next up; Chucks and a just a "couple" other things ;-) http://i1154.photobucke...

Re: Hard lesson learned

Yeah, uh, I should read the original post dates, eh?
Sorry folks; I'd like to implicate caffeine. And ignorance. But mostly caffeine.

Re: New/Old Stock 2007 Dunhill Christmas Pipes

Dave wanted me to comment, but I have very little to add. I guess you need to figure out what the desired result is? I am seeing (I think) 3 or 4 different thought processes on it. If it were me and the owner wanted them back to original, the look like the color is still there, just enhance it. If ...

Re: New/Old Stock 2007 Dunhill Christmas Pipes

I agree with LatakiaLover especially about adding rather than removing, but I would try one thing first; It's called padding in my world, the processes is simple but difficult to master. you can sometimes rewet the finish without removing it. this works very well for shellac lacier and some waxes, ...

Re: New/Old Stock 2007 Dunhill Christmas Pipes

This sort of thing gets complicated fast. Exact color matching---meaning undetectable when viewed under different light sources (florescent, incandescent, and sunlight)---is very difficult to do, and can't really be covered in a discussion. Teaching it would take lots of demos, examples, and so for...

Re: Hard lesson learned

In a post studying smoke, I managed to break the stem in half on one of my favorite pipes. It is a churchwarden stem with a metal filter attached. anyone willing to give me a quote on a replacement? It was a dirt cheap pipe (30$) but it smokes so well I don't want to have it out of commission, and ...

Re: New/Old Stock 2007 Dunhill Christmas Pipes

I'm not convinced that you need to sand them at all. I suggest that you wrap them in a cloth soaked in denatured alcohol and place in a zip-lok bag over night. Then rub vigorously with a clean cloth. This will remove any shellack that might be present and expose bare wood for you to stain. This way...

Re: New/Old Stock 2007 Dunhill Christmas Pipes

Dave I don't think either of those pipes is contrast stained in the way that you are talking. I can get a very similar effect by sanding, staining with a dark color, maybe oxblood or cordovan for the first pipe, chocolate on the second, then sanding again around 500 and staining with the same color...

New/Old Stock 2007 Dunhill Christmas Pipes

Hello all, I have a staining challenge and could use some input. I do restorations for a local B&M (*I'm also an amateur maker/carver). A client brought in two New/Old Stock 2007 Christmas Pipes that were badly faded by direct sunlight over a number of years. The client would like them restained...

Re: rustication techniques

Well first off that's a nice pipe Sas, looks quite familiar to me ;-) I have been experimenting with hand-rustication using a couple of tools I made on the advice of TaHarris. I used this stuff: http://i1154.photobucket.com/albums/p538/spillproof1/RT1.jpg To make these: http://i1154.photobucket.com/...
