Re: Brew day!

http://img.tapatalk.com/d/14/03/10/erehune6.jpg Found a pic of the new pot and CFC. That CFC cut our cool down to next to nothing. We can transfer boiling wort from the pot to the carboy at 75 degrees F or better. Sent from my SCH-I545 using Tapatalk awesome to see other home brewers on this board....

Re: Is this safe for burl?

I use grain alcohol which is the same as ever clear I believe. Wish I could find overproof Rum out here. It is high alcohol and to me at least tastes better than corn liquor and makes a hell of a good Rum punch lol. Sent from my HTC0P3P7 using Tapatalk I agree you would want to start with something...

Re: Well, goodbye pre-ban ivory

i got an old upright piano a while back free at a yard sale, weighed a ton. we ended up scraping it, wasn't worth the expense to get it tuned and fixed up etc. wish i had salvaged the keys apparently any old junky piano made before the 30s might have had ivory keys.

I wear a light shop apron definately saves your clothes, adds pockets, keeps most of the dust off. if you're not getting covered in saw dust you're not making enough saw dust.

Re: Cherrywood

there's cherrywood lumber which is usually plainsawn and clear, kiln dried commercial hardwood, the cherry I can get here is available 8/4" and at a good price in volume from a local wholesaler with a $500 min order. I'm ordering some tomorrow if anyone wants that type of cherrywood pm I'll add...

Re: Cosmetic repair question

coffee grounds for wood filler? awesome.

at the risk of messing with your stem shank junction and depending on how deep you drilled the mortise would you be able to chuck it on a pin guage and turn down past the check?

Re: birch burl

very nice looking wood, the figure in those burls look great. i've seen a few of ropp's early pipes made from birch. its much harder than cherry and doesn't burn as easily on the sander.

Re: Cutting a Cherry burl

I would cut the burl in half with the cut parallel to the grain running from the center to the pins
then try and cut your blocks running with the grain

Re: bevel on top of bowl

Cut a round disc of 120 grit sandpaper (about the size of a quarter), slot the disc with 6 or 8 slots, use your dremel by going into the bowl about 1/4", then hand sand with 400 grit. You could do that, or use a round file by going around the bowl, then sand. i'm going to try that sand paper t...

Re: Buffing at 3600 rpm

not sure how a bowl buff would behave compared to a wheel, its more blunt and wouldn't into tight corners as well for sure. i would keep a super firm grip on the pipe as you move the piece around on the wheel, make sure you're only contacting the bottom "safe" zone and keep the contact wit...

Re: help about pipe stain

is there any downside to sanding back black or dark brown on your trip wheel? thinking this would turn the wheel into a black paint roller i've only done a few contrast stains, my procedure was stain black a couple times sanding back with 400 or 600 grit abranet on a soft sanding wheel, then top sta...

Re: help about pipe stain

you would apply stain, then buff using rouge compound, then apply more stain? interesting i thought buffing with tripoli glossed the surface over too much for subsequent stain to soak in so i've always used some dull 400 or 600 grit to hand sand in between coats. never used rouge compound just brown...

has anyone tried one of those infrared thermometers with the laser pointer and measure the temperature of the bowl? could even measure the inside : outside temperature to see heat transmission which would add some control for chamber temperature.

2. - Facing also can be done by hand if you do not have access to the lathe with files, sandpaper and flat surface. I use an aircraft counterbore chucked in my motor to flush bamboo It has a piece of 3/16 drill rod intsalled in the pilot. While it's spinning, I push my piece of bamboo onto the pin ...

Or, you could switch/set the camera to spot mode light metering (if there are several, choose the smallest one). Which works pretty well until you're photographing a black sandblast. Honestly, it's best to learn how to actually use a camera- yeah, the technology can help you out, but if you t...

thin CA is great at penetrating into the wood and saw dust. its also used by archaeologists to stabalize brittle fossil bones while they dremel them out of rock. just got some of the small refill bottles with the fine tips makes it much easier to control runs and only squeeze out a small drop. for s...
