Re: Apple Wood
I have a big load of apple wood (a couple trees) that i've cut up into lengths, waxed the end grain. I'm thinking about cutting up most of it for pipes. For anyone who is interested in drying your own project wood the best way is to make a small dehumidifier kiln ( a box big enough to fit your block...

Re: Wood Lathe Stability (w/ Pictures)
I was getting some vibration on my old wood lathe until I bolted it to the table, definately worth a try especially if you want to turn a bigger block of wood thats off balanced. after bolting it down there was still some vibration in the table and I smoothed it out 100% by adding some weight, I cla...

Re: Alternatives to Beall System
I'm shopping at similar hardware stores like lowes locally, home depot etc and yes if you found buffing compound the brown bar is brown tripoli. If they have a white one thats white diamond, and if you're looking for carnauba wax the sales people will probably say they've never heard of it. The good...

Re: Volcano
Todd your morta volcano in your gallery looks badass. the definition on that one is a bit different than the one above, I think the variation with the volcano style is cool.. would definately like to try one. is there some standard chart with an exact shape or is it all artistic preference?

dugouts
So I started making these last fall, they sell in the smoke shops or head shops along with the pipes and hippy culture stuff. I'm also making small hardwood pipes for those types of stores. They're a "dugout" so there's a space to keep your tobacco or "smoking mixture" and then a...

Re: Maple Burl (fixed) - lessons I learned today
I have some box elder burl (the locals here call it manitoba maple). thought it would be way too soft to smoke out of but it looks really cool lots of eyes and red streaks, might look cool in an extension.. is that a faux pas using burl wood with your burl wood?

Re: Purpleheart
I agree several exotic woods I've cut leave me with a stuffy nose the next day, one time I cut a large amount of various exotics including some purple heart without my dust collector running just wore a mask and I was really sick the next day. Has anyone here used santos mahogany? The heartwood boar...

Re: Apple Wood
I've taken a few pieces of well dried apple cut into slabs to show off the grain to my buffing machine and they look fantastic. I'm very interested in making applewood pipes, I did some free tree service this spring and aquired a load of various apple wood, choke cherry and lilac. Fruit woods can ha...

Re: What is your failing rate.
Hi everyone I'm new to the board. I'm new to pipe making, although for the past year I've been working part time in my own shop making other stuff for smoke shops, recently started making small wooden pipes from different hardwoods.. would love to start making pipes from briar. Here's my question ab...

Re: Working with zebrawood and paduak
On the zebrawood, do you guys use the end grain facing out for extensions? It seems like using the end grain would give the extension more stripes? Finally, are there any tips I need to know in order to work with each? Are they toxic, or is it okay for the draft hole to run through them? Any help wo...
