Re: Stain off the stummel looking for the cause.

I always wipe the pipe down with alcohol to even the stain out. And I usually stop staining at 400. It's just odd that one out of 6 pipes had the stain run and only after being in a humid climate for a 1 and a half without being smoked. It is possible that I stained at 800 only. It was earlier in my...

Stain off the stummel looking for the cause.

Just wanted a few opinions. I made a set of pipes for my wedding party about a year and a half ago. I made a Churchwarden freehand for the pastor. He decided to break the pipe in last night. After holding the pipe for a few the stain bled onto his hand. Notes: I use an alcohol based stain I set the ...

Re: Stabilizing Wood

I used the ping pong balls disolved in acetone found here.

It works like a charm. I had issued with inserts splitting and once it's stabilized it turns much nicer and I have yet to crack one.

Re: making rope tobacco?

Kurt,

I got interested in making some rope tobacco so I googled it. And it brought me right back to the forum! Did you have any luck with making rope tobacco? Or could you share some of the resources that you have found?

Thanks

Re: First seeds planted

Don't make the same mistake I did and feel that some direct sunlight was good for the little guys. I left them outside for an hour with the dome on at 80 deg F. Came back and 75% were looking bad. I've since had to reseed a few varieties.

Re: Deep bubbles

I've been trying to. But I'm on a deadline and i'm not sure if sanding it would be in vain. here are some photos. Let me know what you think. I've never had this happen before. http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4070/4379617820_1688f95d31.jpg http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4002/4378886255_d5476530e9.jpg...

Re: Deep bubbles

I just finished a very nice bent dublin and after I hit the stem with white trip I noticed that there are small "sand pits" in the stem. I use ABS rod for my stems and have yet to have this problem. My guess is I overheated the stem. (It was a pain to bend). Any suggestions for getting thi...

Re: that place on a bent that's hard to get to ...

I usually use one of those pink pencil eraser blocks. Just wrap the sandpaper around it and your good to go. It's rigid enough to keep a flat, flat, but it will also give a little to keep the form on curves.

I've started using this stuff and it really seems to make a difference. However, mine is no longer white but a pinkish color. It sucked color right out of the walnut insert!

Fixed it, sometimes I just over think a problem. I just drilled a tad out and too my cutting tool and refaced the shank. Same stem and perfect!

Re: Drilling a bent and using a derlin tenon

Thanks guys. I did not consider removing the derlin tenon. That would make it much easier. I tried some of the above suggestion with getting the mortise wet and hitting it with heat, then setting it with some shellac. It works great but after a few times inserting and removing the tenon, it loosens ...

Also has anyone inserted a derlin/acrylic/briar dowl into the draught hole to fill it in, then drill out the mortise?

Re: Drilling a bent and using a derlin tenon

Fixed tenon length. Insert that I don't want to lose. This is what happens when I cut the tenon to the right length then drill the mortice. Perfect lengths but if I had more tenon I could drill out more...

I'll try building the mortise up. that may just do the trick.

Drilling a bent and using a derlin tenon

I'm working on a bent that has a draught hole and mortise at different angles. The draught hole lines up perfectly in the center of the mortise at 1/2". The problem I have is that the derlin tenon does not fit tightly until the last 1/4 of the mortise. This is due to the draught hole hitting th...
