Contrast stain.

How does one get a really contrasty stain? I've heard that you can stain with a darker stain then sand all but the stain in the grain off. then move to the color stain you want to finish the pipe with.

Is this correct? And what are some other methods you guys use.

Thanks

Gotcha, I'll try to apply it first. So after staining, when the stain gets all dull and almost black, do you sand it out with 600 to get the color you want then use shellac? In the past I've always applied stain in between grits and after 800 grit, I'd stain one last time and then use the brown trip...

Well I picked up some shellac. However I'm trying some spray stuff. The guy at woodcraft recommended it. So do I want to hit the pipe with brown trip first? Then use shellac then WD and wax? When I'm done staining the pipe looks rather dull and usually black. I then use the Brown Trip to buff off th...

Pipe #5 First Freehand

This is my first free hand. This is the 5th stem attempt and I'll be revisiting it soon, still not happy. First was to small, the next 2 I sanded into the airways and the 4th I broke a bit inside of it... Anyway here are the photos! http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3259/2346069633_71768c0aaa.jpg http:...

Just determined that my max lathe speed is 1300rpm. With a 8" buff will that be fast enough to apply the wax?

About 10 minutes if you're holding it.
Haha so I'm not going crazy!

So I take it Shellac is the trick.... I'll try a spit coat on the next pipe.

I did a little searching on shellac a while back. I was under the impression it was used to set the stain, not to help with the shine. On a good waxing job, how long will the pipe keep it's glass like look? Just finished a freehand and so far it's still shinny, just not as shinny as when I first wax...

Quick question regarding how Wax is applied. Do you move the stummels with the direction of the wheel or against it? After reading caswells pdf on buffing, I learned that against the wheel cuts more and with it polishes it. Good question, I've never really considered it. Seriously, though, this sou...

kkendall, that is one beautiful pipe! Amazing Job. If you don't mind me asking how did you do the drilling on the stem? I've often wondered how to drill the whole right at the bit on a semi translucent Lucite stem. It appears that you didn't V slot it. What size bit did you use to get a good draw an...

Thanks for the info guys. I've started lookingup youtube video's and it's helping. I think I'll need to get a better bench grinder. Mine's only 6" and I'm hearing 8" is ideal.

Any recommendation on setups and jigs to sharpen the gouges? I got my set sharpened at woodcraft but I'm not sure my next set of tools will come from there? Anything DIY would be great.

Shaping with woodturning tools.

Well I took a class on wood turning and loved it. I've began to shape beads and such in stems with some decent success. My next undertaking is to turn the top half of the stummel. I have a 1/4 gouge. Could I use this to rough the shape or do I need to by myself a roughing Gouge?

It was $10 shipping + the work (275 I think). I put them back on the chuck and drilled a block last night. Simply beautiful. Everything lined up perfectly.
