Nick, I don't believe Anne Julie and Kent are related but I could be wrong. Speaking of relatives in the pipe business, have you heard of Nanna Ivarsson? Her father is Lars and her grandfather is Sixten. Here is a link with pictures of her work and information if you are interested. She is also an i...

I have used mine both with and without the metal back plate and have decided to leave it in. I like having something hard and flat behind the belt. I can move up above it on the belt if it seems to be in the way. Having it in works great for pokers as marks indicated. Good luck and go slowly at firs...

Here is another relatively inexpensive option I have wondered about. It is called a Clisby Metal Lathe. While designed primarilly for miniture model makers, it seems like the long bed model might work for stems. The biggest drawback is that it runs off a 12-volt DC power source such as a car battery...

Ben, That is a wood lathe. It might work for turning briar but a metal lathe is needed for tenon turning. A metal lathe allows for very precise cuts. With a wood lathe, the cutting tool is hand held and rested on the tool post so just the slightest wrong move would destroy the tenon. I hope this hel...

That is correct. You will need some way to turn the tenon to the correct diameter of your mortise. Some folks have had success with the Pimo tool, but I have never tried one. I have also heard reports that the tool is not perfect and often those who continue making many pipes eventually get a lathe....

Thanks for all the positive comments. This was my final kit pipe and my 5th pipe ever carved. It took me quite a while as I was still learning at that time. I had absolutely no previous woodworking experience so I was having to figure things out as I went along. I'm guessing I spent about 30 hours o...

whitebar's kit pipe
I just uploaded an image of an early kit pipe I made with a kit purchased from Mark Tinsky. The image is located in the new photo gallery and can be accessed here: http://www.tylerlanepipes.com/modules.php?name=coppermine&file=displayimage&pos=-13 http://www.tylerlanepipes.com/modules/copper...

Squaring a Block
What method do you guys use to square a briar block before chucking it into the lathe for drilling? I have used a compound mitre saw but I can't help but wonder if there is a better way.

Artguy, You are right about the backdoor access on the Jet being a pain. I solved the problem by building a large island style table that I have set up with several work stations. The legs have locking casters so I can move it out of the way if I need to. My Jet lathe station is at one end of the ta...

I have seen video of folks carving this way. When they do the drilling, they just hold the block in their hands and it seems to drill effortlessly. My guess is that they must use really sharp drill bits. If I tried this myself, I'd probably rip a hand off or impale my skull with the stummel. 8O 8O :...

Tyler, The drilling videos are first rate! You are really offering a valuable tool for beginning pipemakers. I wish I could have seen this when I first purchased my lathe. It would have saved me a bunch of time as the school of hard knocks seems to take awhile. Watching the videos brings a question ...

Kurt, Safari is the browser I was refering to. The scrolling window does not work for me. What version of OS X are you using? Maybe I need to upgrade from Jaguar to Panther. I love Safari because it loads things so much quicker than other browsers but I still find a few bugs on occasion. I just try ...

Kurt, Excellent description of how to make a light diffusion tent. A set-up like this recreates the light on a cloudy day which is considered optimal light for photography because there are no harsh shadows. The light passing through the sheet is just like the sun passing through clouds. It is soft ...

You guys had me wondering what I was missing because I had never seen it before using the simple, no feature, but quick loading browser I surf with most of the time. I decided to open the homepage using Explorer and there it was, but part of it was cut off on the right side. I then opened it using N...
