Re: Lovat
Thanks Jeremiah. You are correct on all counts. That's why I'm refraining from posting until I improve a bit. I learned a lot from making this pipe. The two hardest things for me were sanding the shank/stem transition and getting the top & bottom of the stem balanced (which it isn't). I don't ha...
Lovat
Finished this today. I haven't been posting any pictures so far since I'm so new but I thought I'd let you know that I am making pipes and learning a lot from you guys. I really appreciate the help. After I make a few more pipes I'll post better pictures. The stem is actually blue cumberland but it ...

Regarding the swandsdown, do you use the same type of wheel wheel for all the different compounds or just use this type of wheel for final finishing. I'm using various menzerna compounds.

Re: Which saw do you use for bit?
SERIOUSLY??!? you use that monster for opening the slot?? Here, let me trim up your whiskers with this chain saw.... woah. The blade is ~0.043 thick. I think the close up makes it look more of a monster than it is. The teeth are super sharp and the blade is used with light pressure. There is absolu...

Check out this topic: http://www.pipemakersforum.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=43&t=9242 Red suggested the Lenox 320JC blades as shown below. I've been using them for a couple of months now. Like my handle? They cut in both directions. Shape them on a grinding wheel. I really like the way they...

Re: Dehumidifier at workshop
Has anyone tried making a briar tenon? There are probably a lot of reasons why it would be bad. But, it would have the same coefficient of expansion (i.e. similar materials).... assuming the briar was from an area near the mortise and the grain was in the same direction as in the mortise.

Re: Emco Lathe for Sale
The auction was cancelled by the seller. "This listing was ended by the seller because the item is no longer available." He probably figured out what it's worth or somebody bought it from him outside of eBay. If he finds someone to buy it from him on Craig's list etc, is that a violation o...

Are red strip inlays a totally stupid idea? I'm sure that would be challenging, or impossible?

Re: sanding wheel or belt grinder, whats your prefrence?
I'm very new to pipe making and I started with a cheap 1"x30" belt sander from Harbor Freight (used a 20% off coupon too). It's worked just fine and does have a dust port. I'm doing all the refining by hand which I think is also very good for a beginner. I now have a variable speed motor a...

Re: Volcano "Capitán Nemo"
I don't really like the shaping of the stem. Seems thick and clunky which is probably a result of the shank shaping. Just my .02 and I don't mean this to be a technical critique. I just personally don't think the stem did the rest of the pipe justice.

Chris, what's the bit you're using to face the mortise? Obviously not a standard forstner bit.
