Removing 1/2" adapter in Beall Arbor
I've just upgraded my motor that has a 5/8" shaft. Previously, I had the Beall Arbor on a 1/2" shaft with the adapter installed in the arbor. The adapter is an aluminum tube with 1/2" ID and 5/8" OD. It fits very tight. Anyone ever remove one once it's in? Any ideas? I may try pu...

Re: Variable Speed Sanding/Buffing Option
I'm actually using it when I do my buffing and polishing. I have a 3600 rpm grinder and I'll slow it down to about 2000 rpm and use an 8 inch buffing wheel which I believe will have a slower surface speed compared to the 6 or smaller size buffs. It seems to be working well. the surface speed (in fe...

Re: Lathe for Sale
Really sorry you sold it. That was my dream lathe. II think your paint colors are what drew me to it, if you run across anything similar please let me know. I'd be willing to recondition it like you did.
If the guy who bought it plays with it for awhile and looses interest please keep me in mind.

Re: My solution to shaping smaller stems
So why not just shape the stem when it's in the real mortise on the pipe?

Re: Variable Speed Sanding/Buffing Option
I just recently purchased a variable speed foot pedal and it seems to be working just fine on my 1/2 hp 6" bench grinder. It cost me $27.95 plus $6.00 shipping. My only question now is, can this cause harm to the motor? No, but you are controlling the speed by reducing the current to the motor...

Sorry you don't trust the published capability of the motors I referenced. They work as stated. Not all motors are the same and inverter rated is like saying digital ready. You need to look at the specs. Sorry I didn't mention that other VFD's do the same thing and have multiple inputs for pots and ...

Re: Developing a personal taste for tobaccos
Check out C&D tobaccos on tobaccoreviews.com. Look for ones with a lot of reviews. They have a large selection of burley tobacco. Peretti is also famous for burley. You can find them on-line. 5 Brothers is the purest burley IMO but you probably won't like it. Hydrate it a bit if you buy some... ...

There are quite a few on eBay right now.

Nice job. FWIW, I won't critique a pipe I can't make. lol. Congrats on making 30 pipes.

Re: Variable Speed Sanding/Buffing Option
VFD's are for those that want or need constant torque at slower speeds. YMMV Plus, in the end, with shipping and extras, you will probably spend at least $298.00 (the "value" version I showed). Since the motors I showed have 5/8" shafts, it's really easy to set them up as buffers or d...

Re: Watchmaker's Lathe
Hey, all that matters is it worked. :D I assume you don't use it anymore? Did it make high quality tenons and could you use it to cut down the rod stock to a smaller diameter? In other words, was it useful for shaping the whole stem, not just tenons? Could you drill with it? I assume not from what I...

Variable Speed Sanding/Buffing Option
Thought I'd share with the group my findings after doing a little research on variable frequency drives (VFD) and compatible motors to use as a variable speed sander/buffer. The VFD is what controls the speed of the motor. It converts AC to DC then converts it back to "psedo" AC using clos...
