Re: Shellacing Problems

As a caveat I've never done this on pipes... So why are you disagreeing with a pipe maker who does one of the best smooth finishes on the planet? Lars Ivarsson stopped at his table at Chicago last year and was impressed. That's saying something. I'm not saying you're wrong, but Andrew has proved hi...

No one called him a sock puppet. The thread feels like we are being punked, Could be wrong? What's wrong with sock puppets Tyler. You never had one? Or is there something I'm missing???He asked."what is a sock puppet" Sorry if I'm bad. The suggestion was made. I think Tyler is simply sayin...

Re: My first shot at pipemaking

Lots of good notes here.

For your next submission, please include smaller photos. It's really tough to get an impression when the photo displays larger than a computer monitor. :P If you need help with that, please ask. There's also a really good guide stickied at the top of the gallery.

Re: First handcut stem...

Honestly, for a first handcut stem, that looks very good.

You can see what needs to be fixed and it sounds like you know what needs to change in the process to make some of those fixes happen. Keep working to fix those issues you can see and keep us posted. :)

Re: Importance of apprenticeship / having a mentor

For you it won't. I'm still 90% pleased by 10% of my pipes, and 10% pleased with the other 90%. Okay, that's a bit of hyperbole, but you get the idea, right? Being really proud of every pipe you make generally means your delusional. It also causes your work to stagnate. To the "they're just pi...

Re: Making a pipe with no electricty

I almost made my first pipe without electricity. Alas, I used a dremel to carve out the chamber and a hand drill to turn down the tenon on a preform stem. Other than that, everything was done with a rasp, file, and gimlets.

Re: We've been making video's about pipemaking.

I'll be honest, I've tried watching them before but got weeded out in the first 3 minutes. :P That being said, I watched the entirety of this one and I disagree with folks who say they're too short. Under ten minutes is a long period of time to hold an audience's attention and a lot of material to c...

Re: Influence vs. originality

I think that copying is important, both as an exercise for those doing the copying and as a way of spreading good ideas. Originality and innovation tend to come in singular events instead of in an entire body of work for anyone. We tend to copy great original ideas because they work to move the conv...

Re: What is a Pipe Turd?

Next take some material off the sides of the shank. When you look at the shank face, you want it to be round and cylindrical all the way to the bowl. The top of the bowl looks like it's higher on one side (the right side in the last picture). Bring the higher side down so it's symmetrical. Then ref...
