Re: Drilling the mortise and facing the shank last
Your method is certainly creative. However, if you have a lathe you can buy a set of pin gauges, insert the appropriate pin into the mortise, chuck up the pipe, and then face the end of of the shank while it spins on the lathe. It seems like it would be an easier process, but it does require specifi...

Re: Turning Stummels
Don't remove the block from the chuck unless every operation you need performed on that axis is completed. This means facing, drilling, and turning. If you have to chuck it up again it will never be 100% accurate.

I heard about this. It really does suck. He was quickly developing quite a penchant for just the types of shapes I like. I always looked forward to his posts. Heartfelt condolences to his friends and family.

I'm in tentatively. I have to redeem myself for missing last year. Still much will depend on deadline and shape.

Re: Classic Pipe Shapes
The PIMO book will not teach you shaping. The best reference materials for classic shapes are old catalogs from the various manufacturers. The earlier the catalog the better. There have been successful reprints of several, BBB, Dunhill, and Loewe come to mind, but there are also digital representati...

Re: Reversed Rhodesian
The pipe itself looks pretty good. What struck me was the drilling. It looks like the chamber was drilled too deep with a bit that had too rounded of a bottom. I could be mistaken.
Overall it looks like a nice pipe. I'd sure smoke it!

Now that is a cool pipe!
You might try a medium or light brown sanded back. That should be just enough to highlight the grain I'd think. I'd experiment on some scraps first.

Re: 2015 New Orleans Pipe Show
Well in typical pipe maker fashion, waiting till the last minute to book a hotel was a really bad idea (suits me right for thinking a month out was plenty of time). Something much more notable than a pipe show must be going on, because hotel prices for that weekend are through the roof, even for the...

I'm with Todd on this one! Those tampers are pretty cool, especially considering your tools, but I'm relieved that you are getting proper care. Please get well soon!
Re: PITH 2015
As much as it pains me to say this, I must respectfully bow out this year. I was really hoping to get some time last weekend but a lot of things came up. This is especially disappointing to me as this would have been my 5th consecutive year in the PITH. Sorry to let you guys down.

Re: First attempt at a blowfish
What Premal and Jeremiah say are good things, but to me you missed the mark entirely. Sure the shape is interesting, but a blowfish should be about following the grain and in that respect this pipe could use a lot of modification. On the next one loose your preconceived notions of what you think the ...

Re: Really Cool Old Lathe
Better pick that up as a back up lathe. You know when pipe making doesn't quite get the electric bill paid. Or you could incorporate it as part of a rigorous exercise regimen.
Seriously, though, that is a cool machine.

Re: First Diplomat. Please critique
Pretty good job, actually. I was under the impression that a traditional diplomat had an oval shank and a prince/apple like bowl. You could definitely take more off the chin and work on the flow of the bottom line. Additionally your rim needs some sort of bevel to prevent charring. This pipe shows y...

I'm assuming that's a George Dibos replacement stem, cause I don't think I've ever seen a GBD with a stem that nice....ever.
Great example of using reflections as a shaping guide.
