Re: The current state of this forum

I am pretty inactive here mainly as I have very little to add to most threads. But that does not stop me from having opinions. The 2 sub groups that will find this forum of greatest value are the complete novices. When answering their questions, keep in mind they may very well not know a stem from a...

At the moment it seems he has no listings on eBay and his shop seems to be empty also. Has anyone heard anything?

Nosewarmer Poker

Since I have trouble making a pipe with a bottom contour that pleases me, I decided to take the easy way out and make a poker. So far I have done about a dozen and they sell pretty good. this pipe is 4 1/4" long by 2 1/8" tall. Outside bowl diameter is 1 1/2" http://i1233.photobucket....

This pipe pleases me, but I am sure y'all can give me suggestions to make it please me more. Thank you. http://i1233.photobucket.com/albums/ff387/dgerwin11/11413f_zps4ec3b3bb.jpg http://i1233.photobucket.com/albums/ff387/dgerwin11/11413b_zpsf761377d.jpg http://i1233.photobucket.com/albums/ff387/dger...

Re: Another DGE Bent Nosewarmer

I have been vocal about my preference for Carter Hall on Pipe Smokers Forum. Some of the guys sent me that for my birthday last year.

Re: Another DGE Bent Nosewarmer

That was one I got from Tim West. But you never know what the grain will look like till you get in it. As new as I am at this, I don't buy expensive fancy blocks.

Re: Unbalanced DGE Nosewarmer

I tried to incorporate these comments when I reworked this pipe. How well did I follow your ideas? I have lots of friends who tell me I am absolutely great at this. I hope for honesty from you guys. I just noticed that I did not have the stem snugged up to the shank when I took these pics. There is ...

Re: Unbalanced DGE Nosewarmer

Since I am making primarily nosewarmers, I am not sure how to incorporate the normal standards of proportion. If I was doing billiards, let's say, the proportions are clearcut. Suggestions are always welcomed. As s y noted, I do believe some thinning down would improve the lines. Maybe the proportio...

Unbalanced DGE Nosewarmer

It is very evident that I did not have the stummel squared up right when I drilled the mortise. I had made other pipes from this same batch of briar and had rave reviews on the briar and the drilling. Shaping not so much. So I decided to work on my shaping and see how good this briar is. I also emul...

DGE Cob Wardens

I also like to modify corn cob pipes. They can be seen here http://www.etsy.com/shop/cobcobbler?from_reg=2&joined=1&show_panel=true I don't just slap a new stem on them. I replace the stock shank with one turned from various woods and drill them 9/64". No filter. http://i1233.photobucke...

Re: DGE Latest Effort

Ernie, I am conflicted. Sas makes you sound like evil incarnate, but you come across as pretty decent. And you both have given the same advice to stick to learning the classic shapes. My passion is nosewarmers, and some of my cob nosewarmer customers like the briar nosewarmers too. Now that this kit...

DGE Latest Effort

14 months ago I ordered 2 quarter bent kits. They were back ordered and I forgot about them. Well they showed up the other day. The first one is patiently waiting for me to fire up the wood stove. I chased a fissure almost into the bowl. On both they were drilled by someone's semi trained chimpanzee...

Re: Pricing

I realize that people here do try to be helpful. What I really mean is be tough on me. I can't learn squat if people blow smoke and tell me "Good looking pipe, just tweak it a little." As I said before, I am shooting for a $60.00 pipe, but I want it to be the best $60.00 pipe I can make. B...

Answers in order: Materials + labor + profit = price. No formula accounts for reputation or lack there of. Take you best shot. Meaner SOB's have tried and failed to hurt my feelings. See some of my first efforts. I think I''ll past on this one. If you are feeling generous, please comment on "DG...
