Re: latest attempt
I like it. The stem looks a bit unrefined, but the rustication and the shaping are class. I bet Wayne is happy you sanded out the chamber! ya, the stem work is shoddy at best. once i saw the tenon shining through i didn't see much point. I gave this pipe to a friend who is wanting to conv...

latest attempt
I'll call this an attempt at a pipe. I messed up good on the stem. I wasn't thinking about how long i made my tenon and sanded down too close. I figured I'd share it with you all anyways. http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7237/7205373918_6aebb21dc2.jpg http://farm6.staticflickr.com/5114/7205369416_78cbb...

Re: Looking for Lathes in all the wrong places?
you could probably do some small stuff on that one, but you will be very limited. Also, i think you can buy those new for that price if you catch them on a sale. I'd recommend you wait to find something bigger. Here a few months ago i went and looked at one of them that someone was selling for 350 a...

historical tobacco book
Below is a link i found on the Fair Trade Tobacco forum for an old book on pipes and tobacco. It's hand written in cursive so its a little slow reading but very interesting. I've not made it all the way through it yet but thought you all may enjoy it also. http://archive.org/stream/smokianahistoric0...

Re: Facing tool circles
I'll keep taking cracks at it. I've tried a bit I ground myself as well as a bit I bought. I've also gone multiple passes. What would you recommend for feed rate, fast or sloooow? Thanks Tyler I'm still hand cutting my tennons on a wood lathe, but i have a ton of experience on a brake lathe. I'd sa...

Re: Strawberry Tree
What a cool looking pipe! It would be nice to have a great briar alternative to use that one could actually get locally. Plus, "strawberry wood" just sounds like something pleasant to smoke out of. The Pacific Madrone that I'm using for my practice pipes is basically "American Strawb...

Re: Adapting an electric motor into a sander
You need a bearing puller, it grabs the pulley the puts pressure on the shaft in the centre, slowing forcing the two apart. Take it to your local friendly garage/mechanic and ask them if they can help, have some beers in the car. If they have the right equipment and the shaft isn't totally screwed ...

Re: Adapting an electric motor into a sander
I don't think you should need to dismantle the motor. You'll just need to figure out a way to adapt the shaft to fit whatever type of disc you are going to use. What size shaft does the motor have? Is it straight or tapered? Does the shaft have a keyway or use a setscrew? Does it rotate CW or CCW? W...
